I did exactly this, starting when I was 30. It was a lot of work and it was made worse by starting a family in the middle. That extended things by a couple of years. But it was worth it, salary and position-wise.

In 1987 I was programming in C via a VT220 terminal connected to a VAX which was then cross-compiled for the MC68020. Except for C, none of those things are likely to be found outside a museum. Also, I am old.

The Hitachi (now Renesas) SuperH family was pretty good for its time. A project I worked on the mid to late 90s used one and it was great to develop for. Even the assembler code was understandable for someone like me coming from a Motorola

I worked at Xerox during this period and know and/or worked with all of the people in this article. Dealing with paper is a colossal PITA but it's why printers and copiers exist so you have no choice. Xerox's strategy of buil

I sold my moka pot at a garage sale when I bought my first espresso machine. Which broke. As did the two others I bought after that one. I'm now using an Aeropress, which is another device that coffee snobs look down on. But I'm s

I live in the US. When I was done with my Bachelors, which I did in the evenings while I worked full time, I had a choice of two local universities for graduate study. The CS grad course in one was really a PhD that granted a Masters part w

There's no question git is overkill for individual projects but it doesn't take long to learn the add/commit/push commands you'll most often use. But there's nothing wrong with wanting to build your own tools.

Pascal was the teaching language in the early 80s. I had compilers available for the IBM 370 (VM/CMS), the VAX (VMS) and even cross-compilers for bare metal MC68000 and PDP/11. Early Macintosh development used Pascal (though it

When things don't work in Firefox I try Edge (Canary) and then Safari. Right now, Edge is about 10% of my web usage but it's growing.

I trained in cold water rescue and there was a lot of emphasis placed on low head dams. They seem to be everywhere once you know what to look for.

They called my 7Mbps DSL "High-Speed Internet". And it was only that "fast" because we had two phone lines. Now I have Spectrum and get 200Mbps. A lot of people around hate Spectrum but it's been fine for me so far.

I use a Mac, which has GarageBand installed, and Audacity is still my go-to choice for any audio editing. I just used it to split a stereo track into two mono tracks, something I'm not sure I can do in GarageBand (TBH I didn't loo

I took an Ada programming course when I worked at a defense contractor in the late 80s. Coming from C and Pascal it seemed familiar enough to learn quickly but was overkill for what we were doing at the time. I left soon after and I have no

Post-WWII R&D was vastly different from what R&D is like now. No one is funding research that isn't directly product-related or with an unclear or long-term ROI like that anymore. There never will be a Bell Labs or PARC every a
