I think the general aversion to OSS is more that there is no responsible actor. In many cases, if you integrate a third party paid solution you can file a bug on that solution with reasonable confidence it can be a priority. If you use cod

Parent was arguing to not delay capital gains at all, as was the article. I'm pointing out how that idea is bad.

Income tax on the gains tends to be bigger than these if you hold on to a property a while in a hot market. 20% of 400,000 is much bigger than 2% of 1,000,000 if you buy at 600,000 and sell at a million for example.

Property taxes are such a small portion of property value that they seldom force a move. Capital gains can be anywhere from 20-50% depending on country. Having your home go from 800,000 to 1,000,000 and having your property taxes go from 40

I think being able to put off capital gains on assets like homes and start-up stock is necessary for the tax system to not do awful things like force people to sell a home because it becomes too valuable or bankrupt someone who has stock op

The problem isn't that it hurts the sheep as well, it's that it hurts the sheep almost entirely. Raising capital gains would be a decent idea that forces the rich to pay more. Basically zero support for it. Closing loopholes help

Collateral for a loan is a completely separate point. The issue was taxing unrealized capital gains. Effectively if your house goes up $100,000 you'd owe the government the capital gains tax on $100,000 immediately, not when you sold.

Capital gains being delayed is not a direction we want to pursue. There are huge problems with unsellable stock in venture-backed start-ups and other situations where you can end up owning a massively valued asset that you can't sell t

Capital gains aren't a strange middle ground. They are the best attempt to have an income system work: they allow the taxation of income from money. A system that taxes only income from labour is grossly unfair to the poor. A system t

There is a difference between being self-critical once employed (where I agree it's a useful practice) and being self-critical during an interview (which is often viewed as the process of selling yourself in order to get a job).
