I'm confused. The image behind the LCD is clearly not from the LCD (there is a parallax effect), but the background image still seems artificial. Is this just two screens stacked on top of each other?

That is an interesting trade off. Still good new though, in my opinion. Cancer seems much more tractable than aging. If we can reduce the problem of aging to something that only requires us to additionally solve cancer, I would be ecstatic.

Thanks! I'd love to play around with some genetic algorithms in a game design setting. It sounds like people have been having some success using it in StarCraft, and I think I could definitely find some use for it in my level generator. I m

Turns out I'm a lazy programmer when it doesn't involve pretty moving graphics. I suppose the old blog deserves some code love too though. Should be fixed up now, thanks!

I can't stress how fantastic it is being free from the chains of handcrafted levels. You can really iterate and refine the core mechanics all the way up to end of production. It's liberating! For some genres interesting levels are a must th

What I've learned in grad school is that being knowledgeable and being a good researcher are surprisingly orthogonal. I'm a little bummed that I don't get to spend more time learning, but what it comes down to is that learning is a personal

Very cool. This is headed in the right direction. I think there's a lot of room for improvement in LaTeX editors. For instance: Suppose I'm reading a PDF compiled draft and spot an error in an equation. It would be fantastic if I could simp

Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to contact Microsoft and negotiate an XBox Live Arcade publishing deal? I've been developing an XNA game full time for the last 2 years and am unsatisfied with the state of XBox Indie Games.

Ah, but then the article would have to be edited to remove the false exception, thus making the exception valid again. It seems we've arrived at a proof that Wikipedia in fact can not have perfect, comprehensive knowledge of the world.

Exactly. These aren't game mechanics, they're psychological hacks. Classic game designers used all these 'mechanics' as a sort of spice, to enhance the solid gameplay already in place. Games like Farmeville are refined and condensed spice.
