The government has few uses for total surveillance, and almost all are obviously bad. Private enterprise has a million uses, most of them various degree of bad, but as a society we've been blind to this kind of badness for many decades

That's the key insight that's missing in most of the automation/employment discussions. Yes, absolutely, in the end people were better off with automation. But these particular people - and their families and children -

The constraint here is the e-ink refresh rate. That constraint does not exist on regular screens, which is why I'm surprised neither mobile reader apps or even desktop software takes purposeful advantage of it: fast scrolling back wi

The AI may have been . But so do the humans. You don't know what they did or did not saw over the years, especially before they were employed with you, especially when the topic is RE of some project that has OSS components in it.

I don't disagree. Fortunately, for as long as open-weight models continue to track SOTA with a few months lag, we lose at most those few months if big providers decide to stop playing nice with the people.

Pretty sure that was the plot point of one of seasons of Westworld, with the twist that AI released an app similar to DoorDash / TaskRabbit and used job postings there as direct API to people. EDIT: pretty sure Person of Interest did t

Sounds reasonable. I mean, if as a human, you discovered the Word of God in yourself, the lost recipe for how to be the human your Creator intended, wouldn't you want to share it with all your fellow humans, so we could all be better a

If you have a machine and suddenly realize you can run LLMs on it, yes. If you're buying a machine specifically so it's capable of running LLMs for you, then the purchase cost is your up-front payment for the inference you'll

I don't trust any company, AI or otherwise. Business is business, companies are only nice while margins are good. I'm commenting on how things are now, not how they may turn out at some point in the future. This is in response to

Big corporations can't do shit about open-weight models that already exist, because those are... just bags of floats. Once released, there is no unreleasing them. The Internet never forgets. Download the files as they come out if you&#

Game developers cheat like there's no tomorrow, though. In the videogame 3D graphics space, the old mantra was, "if it looks right, it's right ". That barrel you shoot, is really half a barrel when you're up close,

Them complaining about distillation is 100% hypocritical, but also understandable; they found a goose laying golden eggs, but didn't expect it to be so easy to clone through distillation.

Luddites were complaining about having their lives upended and being thrown into generational poverty. That is what wide-scale "disruption" looks at the receiving end.

It's not a real problem. It's one of the most honest business models currently employed by tech companies - simple exchange of money for value. Training wasn't free and only few players on the planet had enough capital to per

100% this. And frankly, I think most of the source of outrage is this: > Yeah on the one hand opening your code got you credit which was nice for the ego and for getting paid, and AI trains on it and doesn't give credit where it&#x

Sort of. Maybe not at GPIO level, but come on - the phones are loaded with sensors that mostly cannot be accessed directly, APIs increasingly expose them as logical indicators of system state, hardcoding a use case and throwing 99% of the s

I don't know the argument so I won't insist on the point, but I fail to see how it is relevant. Even if all proprietary LLMs disappeared today, efficiencies of scale alone mean the big cloud vendors can take the same open-weight L
