I wonder which apps were used to plan the nation wide riots over the summer? Or was that a dream?

I wish social media platforms would be agnostic to political events and focus on facilitating conversations.

No, but there is a strong will to reach gender and race equity in tech. And I don't think this can be achieved by accident. There must be intentionality to achieve this. Just look at this NYT hit piece on Coinbase yesterday and all the

But I think it's largely millennials who are pushing for more content moderation on the web. That's been my impression reading forums such as HN and Reddit.

Better authentication practices. I've been writing auth for the web since 2005 and it hasn't gotten easier or more convenient as a programmer or as an end user. The problem is so bad that email/password combos need to be mana

This might be relevant to you: > 56. Sometimes unsolvable questions like “what is my purpose?” and “why should I exist?” lose their force upon lifestyle fixes. In other words, seeing friends regularly and getting enough sleep can go a lo

As someone with concerning myopia, the 20-20-20 rule has always been a difficult habit to make. 20 minutes is not long and getting up to look at something outside is quite demanding. I often have 2-4 hour sessions without looking away if I&

I see comments in this HN thread about word processors and agile development and I'm thinking... isn't Notion a tool to take notes?

Strong disagree here. I'm not sure what's going on, but this craze about computational photography is ruining cellphone photography for me. Try to take a selfie with the iPhone 12 Pro. It's awful. If you use the regular camer

Doesn't look like the type of regulation we were hoping for. The regulation seems to apply to content moderation and controlling information. Basically the exact opposite of what we need.

You're right I might be insensitive and ideally I would have the time (and patience) to have a useful, thoughtful conversation with each person I talk to. I don't have 8 years experience working from home, so it's possible th

How did we get to the point where what we say needs to be factual? Factually correct speech has its place. But when you're making Youtube videos, podcasts, writing comments, talking with friends, you don't need to be factual. That

In Canada, therapy is very expensive. About $150/h in the major cities. Meanwhile all my American friends get free therapy. Weird how that breaks the narrative about US healthcare.

I think the size of these groups are greatly exaggerated by social media. Conspiracy theorists have always existed and are practically harmless. Sure there are incidents that occur, but likewise, 1000 people a month die from falling down th

Yup. In Canada, those who are overleveraged with massive mortgages far away form the office, are rewarded with mortgage deferrals and low interest rates. Those who save money, rent, and made sacrifices to live close to work, are the ones to

I think this is an exaggeration. The "massive tax benefit" is not that large for most people. Perhaps if you have dedicated office space and a large mortgage. I did the math for my T2200 and the total tax benefit was $500/yr.
