I once hired a designer to put together the cover art for a CD, based on the fact that he was nearby, affordable, and had a limited but decent portfolio online. (The project had a small budget, so we weren't shooting for the stars or anythi

Care to elaborate? As I see it, classes named after colors are based on unstable assumptions about presentation. When these assumptions change, you've saved yourself a headache if all you need to change is one line of CSS, instead of every

I understand what you are going for, but in this case, I think a more relevant question is "can my housemate/co-worker/sibling/mom get the hang of email or phone?," in which case the answer is certainly "yes." If I need something done, and

If there's a real market for this kind of app, that's great and I hope it does well. But it's not something I would ever use. (This is intended as feedback -- think of me as the type of user you'd have to work hard to win over. Maybe it's a

I only ever wash dishes by hand when I need some time to clear my head and relax. The other 5 or 6 days of the week I'm incredibly glad I have a dishwasher. I think this appliance saves me more time than anything else (in the kitchen).

In my experience, daily stand-up meetings work best when: -The team is new, or starting on a new project. -The product is approaching a big deadline. With the former, it helps the team build momentum early-on if there is a chance to sync-up

Instead of classes for each color (".red", ".blue", etc) you should use classes which indicate state or function (".primary", ".warning", ".success"). Otherwise you might find yourself editing a lot of code just to change the colors of your

Personally, I've found that I no longer think twice about the VS2012 UI (been using it since the beta). I don't know if I'm more or less productive than I was in VS2010, but the difference is likely marginal since I haven't noticed. It's th

I can see exactly what you mean, but the point you make is marred by your usage of the word "Idiots." The concept of Office being a different kind of "Metro" than normal Metro is not obvious to everyone. Edit: I guess I'm just confused abou

IMO, the solution to "it's different" is either to learn how to use the newest version, or to not upgrade.

Free dynos shut off after inactivity (~30 minutes in my experience). So you're probably subsidizing a lot less than you think, since most production apps have scaled beyond the free tier.

> "maybe it's just common" Perhaps making it a poor choice for building a brandable user interface. That is, if you want your app to stand out from the crowd.

I agree. This site seems to call-out anything with a certain kind of texture as "skeumorphic," and many of the examples are quite attractive on their own. But I think you're pigeonholing it into a certain school of design. I don't see it ca

I wasn't arguing that texture is worse. When used appropriately, it's generally better than solid colors, both in terms of UX and just visual attractiveness. But there is a certain category of textures that seem to come up most often on thi

I think that's part of the point here. The visual metaphor of leather doesn't make much sense, and is only there as an ornament because it (apparently) looks attractive. Why include the leather at all, if it's not a helpful metaphor for usi

My designer friend and I are laughing so hard at this that we're crying. In all seriousness, this is the perfect tool for showing people how skeumorphism can be taken too far. I actually like many of these designs, but the point is that the

Would recommend using CodeRay with the Kramdown gem (a markdown converter implemented in Ruby). Kramdown is a superset of markdown, and has a ton of other nonstandard (but nifty) features.

Sometimes, if you really know your target audience and how they'll respond, it's okay to create what might typically be considered a UX nightmare. I'm not convinced that this was one of those times, but I could be wrong.
