There are so many better things to teach an 8-year-old than how to make money. Instead of trying to raise $100k for a little website, why not teach the kid HTML, CSS, maybe even JavaScript so she can make one herself? It's not that hard, yo

I've never had much regard for Silicon Valley business types. I am convinced that the only thing that truly matters to succeed in tech is to create something that people want but don't necessarily know it yet. Everything else is just fluff.

A web rendering monoculture may be a bad thing, but what would you do in Opera Software's position? Opera has less than 4% market share so companies very rarely go through the trouble of supporting its quirks, resulting in a subpar web brow

Iceland shouldn't ban pornography because that is forcing someone's personal value upon a whole country based on questionable reasoning. "[Ogmundur Jonasson] argues that easy access to online porn increases the frequency and severity of sex

Even if Jonasson's claims are checked out by evidence, nannying a country's population by censoring offensive material is not the right course of action. You do not change public perception or progress society through censorship. The intern

This is neat! I wouldn't buy this for $2, though; I think free full-featured pixel art editors like GraphicsGale can do the same thing. On the subject of pixel art palettes, this guy put a lot of work into making an ideal generic palette.

Agreed. It's annoying how Microsoft misleads the reader into thinking that they personally look through every email.

What compels someone to destroy documentation for an open source project?

The contenteditable element is neat for quickly turning HTML elements into a notepad, but scripting custom functionality into it (creating a header after pressing enter twice, etc.) was a huge pain in my experience.

CoffeeScript doesn't try to circumvent JavaScript, it tries to enhance JavaScript. Its constructs and clarity boost my productivity, especially in large projects. Though I wouldn't recommend it to someone who hasn't learned JavaScript yet.

It'd make more sense to go broader and teach that due to how our brains work, all pleasure becomes diluted the more we have. Therefore, it is desirable to avoid living in unrestricted excess, be it with drugs, sex, food, or what have you. O

Python's culture heavily encourages explicit, consistent code while Ruby's culture is a lot more flexible in that respect. Rails makes many assumptions by default and has an API that is based on clever coding for the sake of maximizing prod
