The best way I've found to get freelance jobs is to tell people that yes you are unemployed but you're not interested in the kind of work they want done, even though you could do it in your sleep. Then when they push back, quote them an abs

This sounds like it could be me, a year from now. I'm literally in the middle of an interview* with a SF startup that came about because they read my blog post (via Hacker News) about failing at my own startup. HN is undeniably awesome. (*O

Absolutely agree, this is a really awesome side-use of this project. Great work!

Wait a cotton picking minute. I abandoned a bunch of robotic product ideas because I couldn't find a market niche that could afford them. I have the skills to make fully autonomous UAVs and AUVs. Here is a very wealthy market niche. Hmmmm..

I'm an Aussie coffee afficionado, and the best coffee I ever had in London was at Monmouth. No idea of the address, but it was about 5mins walk from the modern art museum, on that side of the Thames, near a food market. As if that'll help..

If cars are self-driving, there'll be less of them. And they can better utilise existing road space (faster reaction times means they can tail-gate with comparative safety.)

Try buying your own lithium ion battery that'll last eight hours then. Companies need to make a profit too...

What's cool here other than the fact that it seems to react really quickly is that it has no universal conception of location, like GPS. Nit-picky robotics engineer chiming in: it's not reactive. The planning is done ahead of time,

The big "what stopping this from being mainstream" part of this is the need for a prior map. It's absolutely analogous to Google's autonomous vehicles needing to be manually driven through the area in which they're planning to later operate

Where did you get the idea I was doing project management/collaboration software? We were building a hardware device to allow collaboration through existing physical whiteboards. Not another online whiteboard application.

Savings. I had almost two years runway to start out. I've only burnt two months worth.

Truly? I don't know yet. I have the luxury of a reasonably large nest egg from my previous job, so I'm not desperate for work. I'm considering whether any of these ideas are licensable (I've never done licensing before, but it doesn't seem

She's a lot more risk adverse than me, but I ran the numbers, we had about two year's runway, and as I said when I started out "at least if I fail it'll be quick!" :-)

I can't stress enough that it wasn't just me doing this - I had a great pair of co-founders, even though they weren't as committed and ultimately walked away from the business. They helped a lot with the cold-calling and face to face meetin

More the opposite - I care about money only to the extent that it allows me to stay out of trouble. I don't want to be a millionaire, I'd just like $5M sitting in a bank account at 5% so I don't ever have to think about money again. The tec

I totally agree that there's a selection bias for stories about successful outliers. On the other hand, it's not as if anyone is out there saying "Try it! You'll probably succeed!" Quite the opposite; almost everyone knows and admits that 9

I'll have to worry about money eventually, but I'm one of those risk-adverse engineers so by the time I quit my job in the first place I'd saved up almost two years of runway. I'm definitely still creating. Watch this space.

Essentially it's ray-tracing but in a grid. Bresenham's algorithm let's you do the ray-tracing efficiently. This is done because a LIDAR/sonar/whatever scanning range sensor returns the angle and range to a reflective object. In most cases,

The current approach is as follows: 1) User sends next action to OnLive. 2) OnLive renders the frame and sends it to the user. 3) Repeat. The "faster than light" approach is: 1) OnLive renders several frames that could be the outcome of a
