People not familiar is Microsoft are probably not taking part in a discussion on HackerNews, let alone a discussion of why their SQL Server product was not ported to *nix.

Thanks for taking the time to answer! You have helped me understand a few things better. However I also realise now that I phrased my question wrongly and should never have used the word "bound". I also see now that I misread the grand-pare

Since the rotation of the earth has to be factored in, does the earth's orbit around the sun need to be as well? How about the suns orbit around the Galactic center? I suppose my question is - all things being relative, why aren't the neutr

A few minor annoyances with the using the Ubuntu repositories. Mint, on occasion, looking for Katya repos. Actually, I do wish I had just stuck with Mint, but I dont have time to go back now, and If I am going to install another distro, the

I actually switched to Mint 11 after 11.04 and found it to be a really good alternative. Specifically because it didn't break everything and has access to all the Ubuntu repos and tools. I switched back to Ubuntu for 11.10, hoping some of t

Thanks, I knew about that when it came out, but before I was able to install it, the preview of 1.9.3 came out - which is when I first noticed just how much faster it was. After running a few tests on the commandline, rake and rails command

Maybe there was something wrong with my 1.9.2, but when working with rails projects (rake, rails console etc), this feels a few orders of magnitude faster.

I believe ORMs want to save you from writing tons of repetitive queries, not to save you from ever having to touch a line of SQL. At least that is what I believe, I have never seen an ORM advertising itself with "NEVER WRITE ANOTHER LINE OF

Granted, it may not make you a "well off" geek, but my point was - at $95, this would be a dream to most of the people who could benefit from it the most.

The geek in me completely agrees with you. But I also think that would miss the point of this being a charitable enterprise entirely.

At $25 they will be helping a lot more people than just well-off geeks - this whole project a charitable after all. I will be buying them for kids who would never have even touched a computer in their lives if not for these (and doing a bit

I think this is a terrible idea, unless that price only applied to buyers in first world countries. At $25 for the board + shipping to South Africa + power supplies I can afford twice the boards I would buy. And even at $25, I can't buy as

Lying well is actually really difficult and doesn't come easy to many people. The differenced between a review written from experience and a review written from someone's imagination may be slight, but I think there will always be markers.

You are probably correct. I don't even know why I like GitHub as much as I do. I have decided not to pay them as I can't really justify the amount (Dollars are not cheap in Africa) - so I host my repos on one of my Linodes and have them bac

I assume that what the poor twenty-somethings actually want is the interface since alternatives like Gitosis and Gitolite are cheap and cheery, but unpopular amongst that crowd. If that is the case however, then I am surprised noone has mad

It would be great if more email clients had encryption built in, and encrypted emails to people with known public keys. Barring that, perhaps something like a peer to peer network where messages are automatically encrypted and addressed to
