You are plenty clever. This is the equivalent of introducing programming by giving a piece of ARM assembly and stating that it is immediately obvious that we are dealing with a merge sort implementation. I’m not sure why, but I see this oft

I found it interesting to learn about the etymology of the word "character". It comes to us from Latin which took it from the Greek (χᾰρᾰκτήρ) which comes from kharasso (χαράσσω) - I scratch or engrave . Our character can be th

I will admit that there are technical limitations in the world. I am not quite sure I said there weren’t. What I said was that they just don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Caching is not holding anyone back, it’s just a technical

Caching is also as old as computer science itself, which is my point. It’s not rocket science. We got that. We don’t need caching solution #6362.

Let’s agree to disagree. I am also not sure what “security” is being touched by TCP (and should be touched by that layer)? Performance could be better, but I’d say pick your battles. I prefer an “eternal” standard than turning everything up

Code itself is a mere encoding of that (mis)understanding in a highly specialized format. What makes me “hopeful” - for me as a “programmer” - about the future is that our problems in nearly all domains are very damn near certain not caus

Yes. I think we just witnessed something akin to the birth of personal computers which puts us around the ‘60-‘70s. It’ll take a while to (vastly) improve and eventually disseminate into society. I’d say a decade at least. A lot of the surr

I’m not too convinced of the persuasive powers of “domain experts” either. I’m thinking about the professional persuaders like politicians. You may dislike some of them or what they stand for, but they are plenty persuasive. It’s just that

Persuasion depends on logos and it is a requirement to be capable of it before you are susceptible to persuasion. Intelligent (and properly motivated) people indeed have staggering persuasive powers over lesser ones. You can watch the news

They don’t need to migrate, but it’s usually a good idea to keep up to date. It’s indeed somewhat of a thing if you have a lot of systems and you have uptime requirements. Plan accordingly and it’ll be fine.

GPT4 is better than its predecessor and quite impressively so. The (probable) param count reflects that. It’s not just param count, because not all large models are good, but it clearly is part of the equation. I always wondered why Altman

That's true. You're probably high on conscientiousness if that's the case though. In which case procrastination is not something you are allowed to talk about because you literally don't know what it is. Joking of course

I’m not seeing the “more” and “less” moral potential as clearly as you do. That’s probably because I’m somewhat of a peasant myself. The peasant in my eyes has the same conundrum but worse: why be moral if your life sucks? And quite possibl
