I suspect the claim is that the talking point is retired because it's false .

OK, but if you avoided disputing the definition of a word the author explicitly said was irrelevant, you would avoid invoking the topic of "what constitutes functional programming" altogether.

The point is "inlining" already refers to this kind of inlining. The already-present form is more limited than the typical use of the term.

What else is that a response to? Macros have had this planned since before 1.0, with the current system specifically designed as a temporary workaround until it that happens.

In my experience, this is a much bigger problem in web programming than elsewhere. Take the JVM, for example, since it's the subject of the article- it's been around for decades and while things have changed, you can still pretty

I read that as "just because" among otherwise equally-qualified candidates , as a counter to an unintentional bias in the other direction.

There are plenty of examples in other fields where we have implemented systems to counter bias against women, and then the demographics of that field have quickly shifted to match the population. For example, before orchestras started doing

Kind of a blessing and a curse- reduces links to a common subset of functionality, but also makes it trivial to link together code from any languages that support the platform's C ABI.

Again, from what I understand, `restrict` is not enough to convey everything Rust knows. Further, those other languages may be nothing like C, but they're even less like Rust. So because of its heritage, even given the information Rust

From what I understand, LLVM still doesn't take as much advantage of that information as it could, given Rust input. It's too geared toward the C family of languages. (But as sibling comment says, the problem was partially the Rus

That image does not seem to have the issue at all. Which makes me think that if it doesn't happen for everything in the scene, the engine is for some reason rendering that object to a lower-resolution buffer and upscaling it with poi

Kind of seems like you're on a hidpi display and the game isn't aware of it. (Or maybe the buffer that mesh is rendering to, but it seems like you've covered that and I don't know Unreal well enough to suggest otherwise.

I couldn't tell you how much impact this actually has, but Vulkan/D3D12/Metal have to be conservative with pipeline state changes, and have to manage the layout of various hardware data structures for you. They've gotten

I know what NP means, my parenthetical implied that you used it in a way that made no sense. Undecidable control flow does not inherently make validation undecidable, or NP, or anything else really. The key (like with any sort of type syste

By "platform support," I was not referring to the number of platforms supported by the API, but the quality of support for the API provided by the platform(s). Vulkan objectively loses to D3D and Metal here. We absolutely know the

It's not NP (whatever that means) if you're allowed to change the API instead of just inserting checks at each call. Besides, Javascript doesn't really need driver support to intercept function calls...

Validation layers were created so drivers could remove checks to improve performance. And regardless, properly handling adversarial input is much more involved than just a validation layer.

There's nothing subjective about it. Take a look at the APIs, they operate at the same level and are designed around the same principles. As for past driver quality, ask a graphics developer doing anything more complicated than a toy w

You're leaving out the "official" counterpart- Direct3D drivers. Microsoft and hardware vendors both have an active interest in adding support for new versions there.

Because they have been doing so with OpenGL (an identical situation) for years. Besides, "purposefully cripple" is inaccurate. They just put more effort into Direct3D because there's no reason to support OpenGL as fully.

A hypothetical WebVulkan is tied to an API that it is guaranteed to have to translate from. A hypothetical WebGPU could simply be tweaked to better support its multiple target APIs.
