As mentioned by Hilary Clinton in a recent interview on the rest of politics, it's very telling that when silicon valley entrepreneurs advertise for nannies, they often have strict requirements for minimising screen time. Seems like th

I wonder whether this is because unlike openai they don't have access to all of the code on Github, or aren't sure they're (legally) allowed to use it. Does anyone know the details?

From using ChatGPT, one of my observations is how it really undermines any point click data dashboarding software, particularly self serve (i.e. where the user is not an expert in the particular dataset). It's easy to get ChatGPT to w

Making milk using cows is incredibly inefficient from an energy inputs point of view. You have to grow crops which you feed to cows which then turn a tiny percentage of the input energy into usable food. As a result, it's possible th

If someone made fake milk that tasted like the real thing I would pay twice as much, no qualms, due to the environmental benefits (assuming it was provably a lot less energy intensive), and also animal welfare issues

25 years ago my secondary school English teacher told us that he didn't read Dahl to his kids because of how it equated ugly and fat with bad. Every time I see this trope it reminds me: I think he was right. The books are wonderful i

If you're curious, I've written a FOSS record linkage library that executes everything as SQL. It supports multiple SQL backends including DuckDB and Spark for scale, and runs faster than most competitors because it's able t

I'd love to hear any real world experiences of anyone who's tried to run jobs that would usually require a spark cluster on a single machine with loads of cores and memory. How big can you go, and how does speed compare to Spark?

The tests are being run against small test datasets of 10s of rows rather than the real data that test whether the behaviour of transforms/joins etc. is as expected. You're right, this approach wouldn't be sensible if the te

You can know what the answer is against a small test dataset though. Obviously the challenge is ensuring it's representative, that you hit the edge cases of real data etc. But it's better than nothing

Try and write any complex SQL as a series of semantically meaningful CTEs. Test each part of the CTE pipeline with an in.parquet and an expected_out.parquet (or in.csv and out.csv if you have simple datatypes, so it works better with git)

I'd advocate starting as simple as possible. It's very context specific, but one very simple architecture to consider if seeing if duckdb can handle your data (maybe on quite a large machine). For larger data, i'm a fan of w

DuckDB is a no-dependency SQL engine that's available from multiple programming languages. A bit like SQLite but optimised for analytics. For instance, in Python, it can be installed using `pip install duckdb`. For things like unit te
