At the end of the article is a link to the author's autologger. You can see what his radios are picking up by capturing the PI code on RDS. As I write this, he's receiving FM stations as far as 916 miles away (KASU).

I’m early into the ownership journey, but in my situation, the station serves a tourist resort area, so the station is trying to capture listeners coming in on the highways into town. The advertiser base I’m developing is primarily made up

I’ve been thinking about documenting the journey online, likely in the form of a blog. I know I would have been interested in reading about someone who took this step before I did. So, the answer right now is "no," but hopefully,

The issue is that the federal government requires broadcast stations (and local authorities) to use a certified EAS box. Currently, there's only one available option, and software solutions are not permitted. A lot is riding on these b

I own a licensed FM radio station in the U.S. The only way I see to make it work is as a one-person operation, as there's no way to afford a staff. I wrote a lot of scripts to make it happen.

This person was working behind the scenes at KGGF in Coffeyville, KS, when the network feed went out during the Royals game. Instead of putting in filler, he took the mic, opened the game app, and called the game live on air! KGGF at fccdat

If the real motivation for people wanting AM radio gone is due to conservative talk, people are likely overestimating the ratings these stations bring in. It’s the exception, rather than the rule, for one of these stations to perform well.

Shortwave doesn’t work well as a mobile, moving medium. It is weak-signal reception (by design) and is likely to be compromised every time your car turns in a different direction.

A scenario where FM broadcasting is somehow unavailable, but AM is available, is not an event; it’s geography. There are vast stretches of highway in the U.S. that lack FM service, but you usually can receive groundwave AM service. At night

Oh I remember this station. This was a part 15 station known as “Village Radio Montclair” that used to use multiple low power transmitters to cover a downtown area, around the turn of the century. I think they were synchronized to create a

Yeah, it’s probably the most organic kind of traffic you can get: people interested in the subject who are not drawn in by targeting or an algorithm. I have to admit, I felt like a misbehaving youngster being disciplined by a parent when he

My jaw dropped when I saw the screen shot of my post as what demonetized his channel. Could it be the AI zeroing in on the word "Hacker"? I feel like I did something wrong, but I don't think I did?

I completely agree about the value of NOAA Weather Radio. On a related note, the Federal government has primary rights to 1710 KHz, but it's rarely used, and available on most radios. I think three or four high power 1710 stations, syn

I have trouble understanding why the replacement will cost $400,000. They cite that each one requires a dedicated fiber optic cable. Is there a reason they can't use wireless links?

Huge fan here. I've been following your work. I downloaded your PDF slideshow a year or two back, and I was very impressed with what you were doing with the vanilla flavor of ATSC. I was particularly impressed in your ability to secur

I think this is clever: a TV station in Oregon is delivering on the promises of ATSC 3.0 with ATSC 1.0. They are broadcasting a mix of high-definition channels, including four channels in 4K, two in 1080p, and eight in 720p, all on a single
