Traffic from HN Demonetized a YouTube Channel
A few months ago, I shared a link to a YouTube video about 4k ATSC, which resulted in a healthy discussion.
I was recently catching up on videos from that popular YouTube creator and he says that his account was demonetized due to traffic from Hacker News.
His quote at 02:44: "Moving forward, if any of you engage in the Hacker News forum, please do not share a direct link to any of my videos on it."
If you'd like to see the video, copy/paste the following on YouTube's search: "Antenna Man Update On My Channel Being Demonetized for Invalid Traffic".
He asked that his content not be linked here, so please don't link to it in the comments.
- codingdave 2y agoMaybe if he chose to engage with us instead of literally pointing fingers, he'd understand us better, learn how to evaluate policies of the platforms on which he participates, and learn what is somewhat common knowledge here - that if your income is dependent on a single 3rd party, you should not consider it stable income.
- iamflimflam1 2y agoWell, you are more than welcome to my videos - here’s the latest one. https://youtu.be/a0D3m-MnaOg https://youtu.be/a0D3m-MnaOg
- RF_Enthusiast 2y agoMy jaw dropped when I saw the screen shot of my post as what demonetized his channel. Could it be the AI zeroing in on the word "Hacker"? I feel like I did something wrong, but I don't think I did?
- ggm 2y agoToo many people blocking ads so low revenue to YT for the traffic?
- RF_Enthusiast 2y agoGood point. Maybe too many security conscious users coming at once looked suspicious.
- ok_dad 2y agoIt isn’t HN’s fault that YouTube has stupid policies.
- RF_Enthusiast 2y agoYeah, it’s probably the most organic kind of traffic you can get: people interested in the subject who are not drawn in by targeting or an algorithm. I have to admit, I felt like a misbehaving youngster being disciplined by a parent when he angrily pointed at the screen and said, “If any of you engage in the Hacker News forum...”
- pestatije 2y agowhat kind of amounts are we talking about? so he lost revenue from whatever viewership he had beforehand...so is this single digit dollars? $20 maybe?
- RF_Enthusiast 2y agoI don’t know, but he says in the comments that it’s his main income.
- JSDevOps 2y agoDoesn’t matter sometimes it’s the principle
- KomoD 2y ago> he says that his account was demonetized due to traffic from Hacker News There is no evidence to support this. I'm going to save people time and link the videos: first video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btAmQyNXG2Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btAmQyNXG2Y update video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7EPGngExZw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7EPGngExZw Also he's claiming HN is a "weird foreign website" with "servers based outside of the United States" which is wrong
- trumbitta2 2y ago> He asked that his content not be linked here, so please don't link to it in the comments. Why did you choose to do the rudest possible thing here?
- KomoD 2y agoI don't think linking public videos is rude, I think making accusations with zero evidence is.
- trumbitta2 2y agoRegardless of the reason, he asked not to link his videos
