If you're getting something for free... you should ask a question who and how is actually paying for it. Facebook can give you lots of stuff for free... because they can show you ads and use that awesome data for various purposes Do

Interesting, I thought KubeBlocks was using custom Source Available license where I see it is AGPL now. Was it recently changed ?

I would be careful here and think through the governance well, as the time goes those nice customers may end up being bought by your competitor who would want to do everything in their power to destroy your project While People change, com

One thing I would be careful with is non-voting members in LLC can still take you to court and it is the great question whenever courts can see you being good Open Source citizen as someone who does not act in the interest of shareholders.

For those looking for tracing but less complexity check out eBPF based solutions such as Coroot or Odigos

Both are expensive. Consider Coroot if you want really cost effective observability :)

I think one thing Andy misses about why people were pissed about Elastic and Redis but not as many for MongoDB and some other is their license and size of Contributors Community. When original license is as restricted as AGPL it is unlikel

Looks pretty cool! I had hard time finding people beyond this company either on LinkedIn or Web site itself. Can I trust my data to those who wish to remain nameless ?

Yep. This becomes expected path - Corporate Open Source, eventually changes license to improve monetization. The way to avoid this is pick foundation based Open Source software which is not controlled by single Corporation like PostgreSQL

I think the "root" of the problem goes to what is the purpose of Open Source ? I see a lot of VC Funded founder convinced what Open Source should make their business model easy, hence licenses such such as SSPL should be called Op

Yep. It is exactly the same as with Oracle - you can use it IF you buy the license... but this also has requirements of playing the Vendor game and as provider you really use freedom to really take care of your customers

I have no idea if Hetzner actions are justified and surely they can do better to ensure there is better customer communication. The moral of the story though is - if you're using commodity hosting and Open Source software it is relati

This argument about "evil megacorp" is problematic because you can't really isolate those from the small and wonderful startups. Specifically I've been directly involved in MongoDB ecosystem with FerretDB and there are s

It is not just compatibility, there are bugs, but most important security issues which are constantly being discovered.

Note though, the code is not Music, it rots quickly without maintenance. The "social contract" of contributing the code is what it will be maintained by collective community, otherwise many companies would just keep it as private

I think antirez has made very rational economic decision. For Open Source Redis/Valkey community though it would be better if he had joined Valkey of course. Note though it is not certain he even could - the Non Compete when you have s

Hehehe, Reading between the lines. Redis is Hurting, Valkey is making a real difference at pulling the customers away. Elastic and OpenSearch were in similar situation, so Elastic went on to change license back to (more restrictive) Op

Lets face it Redis Inc owns Redis trademark, same as it owned Redis software copyright and we should expect it will enforce it. The community took steps launching several Redis alternatives, including Valkey - the next step would be also to

It would be great for Gnucash to get a competition I'm not sure why Mobile Only approach though as most complicated transactions do not need to be dealt with in real time and I think much more conveniently handled on Desktop
