I wonder how easy (or mostly not-easy) it would be for Facebook to build a search engine: While Facebook have some smart people (and part of the data already), I think Google has more people working on search, than facebook has altogether.

but a properly calibrated barometer is WAY more accurate than GPS. 10 years ago I could track a two meters offset (that's the difference between your head and your feet!).

Altitude measurements. My (standalone) GPS 10 years ago had it as one of its main features. The extra hardware needed on a phone can't be that much.

Could this be used on Elasticsearch in general? Any pointers what's needed for that? The interface looks nice, and we have a large(ish) Elasticsearch cluster I'd like to try this on.

While I have no idea how you would fit it in your current infrastructure, I certainly see a (BIG) use-case for: I have this 100 GB, store it somewhere safe (in glacier), I won't need it for the next year (unless my house burns down). I agr

I don't believe at all that Apple was still developing hardware features in July on the iPhone which will ship this fall, only a few months later. After buying some mapping companies, it took them over a year before they released their firs

We just launched our new realtime photo widgets, enabling anybody to embed live pictures on their site, together with a new site. Let me know if you have any questions or feedback! (I'm the co-founder of Skylines).

Great idea: I assume app + backend + twillio API? The only think that might confuse people is if you start to recycle numbers (because you don't want to keep paying for them), and the call gets connected somewhere totally unrelated.

I think this will result in Apple selling less apps: People will set a way better password on their Apple account, and since you need the same password to buy $1 apps (every time!) as you do for remote wipe, people will buy less apps. They

How does this work? I understand if you know the true north and the magnetic north, you can get the difference, but I assume a compas only can measure one of them (the magnetic one). How do they determine the 'fault' in the signal with just

Agreed, but for some (many) projects face detection is enough. For example all the "put a hat on your pictures" apps.

I wonder if this is more efficient. We rent hardware including power and connectivity for about the same as they monthly pay. But we had no upfront investment, and no hardware to mess around with (which saves time).

How do you then handle negotiations? Contracting rates are often a lot (2x-5x) higher than fulltime employment. Do you do the contracting on a really low (contracting) rate, or do you succeed in explaining they will go down 3x in salary onc

Interesting that for this mobile like you need to authenticate, while for the web-like you only need to embed an iframe, and Facebook handles authentication.

As they just raised 100 million, I wonder if putting (a lot of) effort in replicating S3's functions to save part of 40K/month is worth the trouble. And setting that up won't be free either. (their 100 million can pay for the current storag
