I like the way it works here in Québec. To hold the title of Engineer one has to have an actual engineering degree. For example I am getting a "Software Engineering" degree. It has all the same math and science classes as other en

I really think the JS madness is getting to an absurd level here on HN. I understand how it's geting more popular but there really is a whole world outside of webdev. Systems programming, AAA games, simulators and embedded software are

Exactly, this coupled with it's very limited range kept it from taking anything other than east-coast to Europe routes.

I'm not saying I deserve more on a personal basis. I am saying the tone of the article implied the author expected recent graduates to work for much less than 75k. Outsourcing is nothing new and I am completely aware of the effect it is hav

Maybe 75K is high for a recent graduate but I would certainly not expect to be paid a fifth of that like the author boasts he was able to pay his offshore hires. Especially since that makes it fall below minimum wage at 35h/week.

I'm a Canadian software engineering student and I find this article insulting. The author blames recent graduates for wanting to be paid a decent wage. I guess he's missing the point that he only gets to be in the position he is in because

It has been my experience that nutrition plays a big role in controlling ADD. Especially eating a good breakfast. Eating two eggs, fresh fruit and whole wheat toast provides lots of energy.

"The Contest is void in Cuba, Quebec, Saudi Arabia and Syria and where prohibited by law." As a student really wishing to one day work at Google Montreal this has me seriously disappointed. Does anyone know of a way I could participate if I

Computer Engineering and Computer Science were just declared two of the ten highest paying majors in the US. Software is everywhere and in everything. How can you friends ever think the software industry is doomed?

I love Kubuntu right now. It's everything that is good about Ubuntu without the new undesirable additions.

Kernel modules are vital and yet can be very small. On Linux at least.

No it doesn't. But the term Engineer is protected. You cannot legally call yourself an Engineer if you don't have the degree.

In Québec Software Engineering is covered by the "Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec". Software engineers have to come from accredited engineering schools and take the same exams as engineers from other fields. They are also required to follow

Just FYI saying "main raison d'être" is redundant. It's a little like saying "the main sole goal of your existence".

It is a real issue. A human and personal issue. But it is not a systemic issue that represents the state of patent law. If for example the child's Ipad was taken away because it was found out to be stolen property it would have an equally n

I wish I had that kind of freedom while deciding what to wear at work. Right now it's dockers, dress shoes and dress shirts every single day. I really never understood what forcing a strict dress code on your employees is supposed to accomp

It's that much worse when your company still uses a version that has reached end of life. I must loose a good 30 minutes a day because of that.
