I tried it for the first time today for stuff I'm well versed in. It said something along the lines of "remember $USER five runs of Chrome is not enough for high quality benchmarks! What you're doing is called a _trial run_&q

Yep that’s pretty much it. There’s no pushing of the version from the privileged process to the renderer, only pulling. So there’s not many renderers unblocking at the same time to create any kind of herd.

This is interesting stuff. I’m one of the author of the change and working on the next iteration. If you have an example of what you describe I’d love to have a look!

Right now it’s falling back on a mojo IPC. Next step is indeed shared memory mutex :)

Hey, one of the authors here. That’s pretty much it. That said I’m currently working in the next iteration of this which would indeed share more. That said for now it’s not super trivial because it needs a cross-platform condition variable

In systems performance I would advise to never think of any workload as unidimensional (ie: Any file system optimization can either improve IO latency or be useless) Issuing individual truncates of 1B files can be just as much of a CPU prob

You start with a trace event you care about. You see it’s too slow. The first step is that you see explicitly that it’s not because the code is slow, you constantly get descheduled because there are thread state indicators above your event.

Using some scripts/parsers to take DTrace/perf/Instruments/ETW data and transfer it to perfetto was one of the most exciting moments of my performance engineering career. It’s such a powerful thing compared to every sin

I will be checking this out for sure but I really hope they get the tech terms right. It's going to be hard to stand if they do the usual technobabble. They could win major points with their target audience simply by namedropping Vim o

From the description : " It stays up all night, listening out for loud and repetitive noises like fire alarms, and vibrates to wake you up when it hears anything similar."

Maybe backtracking would be used to reduce the search space.

I also would have liked to know why he didn't leave from where he lived. I bet the slow change of lifestyle and landscape going from western Europe to Asia would have been really interesting to experience.

I have to congratulate you for including Canada in the "Francophonie". Usually people equate the French speaking world with France,Switzerland and Belgium. Which is surprising since Canada has almost 7 million French speakers.

Very good points. A valid option would have been to release a torrent of encrypted files and then slowly release ways to decrypt the files one at a time. This way the information is out there but only gets revealed a little at a time.

I think the most interesting thing about this release is the use of OpenCL. With more and more popular applications using GPGPU techniques it's possible that normal users will start noticing the difference soon.

OSes are complicated and gigantic engineering projects. Some of them are most definitely better than others in some respects. Saying that they are all absolutely equal is like declaring every CPU ever designed completely equal. It's tr
