Why do people always feel the need to point out that Android is supported by multiple manufacturers whenever the issue of Android vs. iPhone market share is mentioned, as though they think they've just dropped a bomb on the conversation? I

I think the main issues are that lazy evaluation makes it more difficult to reason about the performance of your code, both in terms of what actually gets computed in which thread / on which core, and in terms of space requirements (lazy ev

Even to the extent that this is currently the norm, why is it OK ? Why should state officials ever be allowed to interrogate U.S. citizens' political opinions, regardless of whether those citizens happen to be standing in an airport? It ma

pg puts forth a similar view in his essay on software patents: http://www.paulgraham.com/softwarepatents.html But I don't think that logic applies here. Sure, if you're a small operation going head to head with some huge corporation, tha

Thanks to everyone who put this together. This probably sounds silly, but Perl was the first programming language I ever did anything "real" with (it was my second language, after Microsoft QuickBASIC), and no matter how many other languag

I'm not a remarkable programmer by Hacker News standards, but I have experience in what I think is a decent variety of languages. I've done C and assembly; I've done a stack-based language; I've done the popular dynamic imperative language

I think Perl 6's Rules are a natural and important extension to the language. Perl has always been a tool of choice for text processing; but people tend to [ab]use regular expressions even where a real parser would be much more appropriate

It may not be a hands-down winner yet, but in the long run it's the way to be headed. I'm more interested in using LLVM on FreeBSD or Linux than on OS X, but I'm happy to see Apple pushing its development.

Let me rephrase that, since you appear to have entirely missed the point of my post. It doesn't matter that Android 2.2 isn't out yet, because Android 2.1 still compares favorably to iOS 4.

Best in terms of what exactly? Baseline snarkiness? Most customers don't know, much less care about, the exact version number of their phone's operating system. They care about what the operating system can do for them. But I suppose if

No, it's emphatically not a problem with the ecosystem. Android 2.2 phones are being designed as we speak, and Android 2.1 works perfectly fine for people in the meantime -- it's not like Google had to play catchup with Android 2.2 the way

I haven't done any iPhone development, but can't the GPS sample rate be overridden in software? I know it can on Android -- My Tracks will let you tweak the sample rate if you want, for example.

It's common knowledge that Apple's rubber bumpers are a workaround for the antenna problem. But you shouldn't have to buy a $30 case for your $200 phone just for the privilege of making calls reliably.

I think that would be bad timing for a Verizon announcement. Wouldn't that just piss off anyone who signed with AT&T for the iPhone 4 just because they couldn't get it on Verizon? Besides, if they're going to announce a Verizon phone

The MacRuby team reckons it's "stable", in the sense that the API shouldn't change too much in the future and it probably won't crash. But there are good reasons Steve might not yet consider it mature enough for the iPhone. For one thing,

MacRuby apparently performs quite well, at least in this stage of its development. What would be really interesting is if this translates into real-world Rails/Sinatra/whatever performance gains significant enough to create demand for OS X
