I hear what you're saying - though I've had good luck (i.e. haven't had to give it a thought in two years) with Syncthing pumping my vaults (and all business files for that matter) to phone, laptop, and backup nas.

I've brushed up against it in the form of datalog as the query language for databases like datomic and xtdb, so it's soul is alive and well! I'm also considering a prolog like domain specific language to make a state syncing

I'm kind of with you here. Lispy languages have structural editing tools that make it a lot like working directly on an AST. It's a delight when you get used to it. The spacing/linebreaks are all just auto formatted and mostl

I used to use a variant of this poison wine problem as an interview question. It was actually pretty good - the ones that could perceive problems abstractly usually got it without too much prompting. And the process of approaching a solutio

I'm independent, but I try out Gemini every time I need some dumb powershell plumbing to tie things together. It's a net time saver, but Gemini still trips up on all of the wacky foibles of powershell, so it needs thorough code re

I work a lot in powershell, and I want to like it. It is built around good ideas.. but oof, every time I have to special case on a return value being either a list or a single item depending on the result-len==1 or not, I die a little insi

I've found av1 and h265 handle some things better than h264 at almost any bitrate. Usually around film grain compression.

I use the duckdb connector as an intermediary for parquet in Dbeaver - it works quite well. I just create views like: Create or replace view parqtable as select * from /pathtoparquet/*.parquet;

The little 8 bit atmel attiny85 has a great fastpwm feature. It can get almost 20khz output,with 8 bit duty cycle control. This is plenty to make a multichannel chip tune soft synth. Sounds good just hooking the pwm pin directly to an earbu

I think that -people- care for customer well-being.. but that it's barely cynical to say that a board of a publicly traded company only cares about it insofar as it effects shareholder returns.. and with proper market positioning, cust

On a few occasions I've found a couple of quarters on the brick window sill next to the carts at my local Aldi. I was pleased by the take-a-quarter-leave-a-quarter honor system.

I'd love to have a dac built in, but it strikes me as being a bit like the old tv-vcr combos. If the built in vcr stinks or doesn't quite meet expectations you're either stuck with its subpar performance, or with the sunk co

It's not very far off to digital audio over PC speaker I'm sure! The AtTiny85 had a great setup for it though, a high speed PWM clock which gives you a 250khz carrier, so just use another hardware timer interrupt every 20khz or so

I had really good success abusing the PWM pins on AVR microcontrollers into acting as 8-bit DACs. Hooking up earbud headphones or a tiny powered speaker was all that was needed for decent (for 8 bit) fidelity. No low pass necessary since th
