I think there's a lot of factors at play when you're founding a company and what Brin is hopefully saying is that given the current conditions SV is difficult for early stage (bootstrapping or seeding), which seems to be true. In

Intriguing. I wonder then; does this mean our spacefaring descendants will be smaller for the very reasons outlined in the article?

This is amazing to me, not because it's a great purchase but rather because of the absolute tone deafness that Twitter is demonstrating. People are not using Twitter because of many reasons and bad image compression is probably not one

I won't directly speculate but I doubt the Face Detection functionality is absent due to some ethical quandary.

This is the common misconception. Think of a cookie as a storage 'bucket' on a user's device. It can store up to 4KB in bytes of, well, anything (a string). JWT is format. That's it. It is enciphered and has the ability

Nice but wouldn't have hurt to throw in a simple little story, like "The Mange guide to Electricity". I already had a good understanding of electricity/electronics when I read that but the narrative created this fun refr

Forgive my ignorance but can someone explain how Joyent's acquisition moves Samsung towards their strategic objectives? In other words, how are they going to exploit this technology (and brain gain)?

CUDA is generally considered a better API and more optimal (likely because of NVIDIA's driver support). Google's RenderScript is a close competitor that actually looks a lot like CUDA (probably for those reasons) as well as Metal

This article is deeply troubling from a factual standpoint and I hope people do more research when considering JWT. Points; 1) His terms are confusing and just plain wrong. Backwards even. For example, he calls storing an id in the token an

A billionaire used his money and influence to destroy an organization because he doesn't agree with what they say. I can think of at least one thing of value that was lost.

7.7%!? WOW! They really hustled those cops. I always hear how difficult it is to work with schools, law enforcement, basically most gov agencies. Surprising to see how well that company played the cops in this instance.

You should also never walk on a sidewalk, for fear of bumping into someone who trips and falls and sues you for personal negligence. You may be safe if you insure for this, though. Ask your Attorney.

No offense to you but that is absolute and utter bullshit. The tax process being exploited has nothing to do with it being inefficient and burdensome. It is in fact that way to obfuscate the external influences that incorporated all the loo

This is really horrible news for Apple. According to this article [1], their sales volume fell from 55% to 37% in India in the first 1/4. Meanwhile, Samsung goes from 35% to 62%. Selling used iPhones there would have allowed them to dr

Great points, but, remember that executive behavior is a by-product of the company culture and environment. I've seen high-ups afraid to make these important strategic decisions in a timely fashion that were rightfully worried. Sadly,
