"Free will" is a gesture at the experience we have of deliberating upon and deciding our own actions, I don't think determinism really matters, as long as we're the ones doing the deterministic calculations by which we c

Oh, I definitely feel like I'm working in the top 1% of jobs now. Full time WFH since significantly before covid, it's B2B so even though I'm nominally on call, that's just a nice chunk of extra pay for maybe 1-2 calls

Speaking as someone who has worked in a factory, you couldn't pay me a six figure salary to go back. And most of the things were automated already, at least as much as reasonably could be.

I get what they're gesturing at, but I find a stronger emotional reaction against child porn than CSAM and it never once occurred to me that anyone thought this term implied it was in any way consensual or non-horrific.

Thank you for the link, that annoys me to no end, as well. I mentally downgrade the reliability of any publication that does not do this, because legal reporting is so uniformly terrible that I hardly trust anyone to summarize things correc

Yeah, I got a Brother laser printer about 10 years ago. Still works just fine. I think it has the original toner in it.

You keep saying 'western' medicine. Is this to imply that some other method exists to study long term harms? I suppose long traditional use might, but this doesn't seem meaningfully different from running medical testing ov

This makes me realize that "Crash Override" was probably a riff on "Flash Override" which I somehow never connected before.

This is the hard part about "value creation." Is something that makes someone happier--even if others see that same thing as pointless waste--value? We don't all want the same things and people want things we don't want
