Well John Carmack is trying to make inroads towards AGI without going the huge compute route, so I don't think it's inherently obvious that it's the only game in town. https://dallasinnovates.com/exclusive-qa-

This is totally true. I've read articles in the BBC news about a 'Twitter backlash' against something where the number of tweets was an incredibly miniscule fraction of the population. I've seen actual physical protests

If that's the point then it feels like a straw man. It literally quotes a couple of the articles saying 'I know it's not sentient'. If the suggestion is that there are a load of 'smart people' claiming Bing cha

Not sure what the point of this article is. The newspaper stories it references aren’t making claims of sentience, but just that something of significance in the journey towards human level AI has been achieved. And the whole ‘it’s just a f

I feel like with a lot of the hardcore anti return to the office people the arguments are disingenuous. People have built their lives (and in some cases moved entirely) based on being able to work remotely 99% of the time, and they refuse t

Completely disagree. I probably have 3 or 4 of these spontaneous conversations that wouldn’t otherwise happen a day when I’m in the office. It might start with ‘what are you working on’ and branch off from there, it’s not just small talk.

Yeah, some of the people I work with I’ve known for 20 years! For me it’s weird to imagine spending a large chunk of your life with these people and not forming some sort of personal connection.

Yes I did, because 'drug abuse' isn't a useful or clearly defined term. Eg. if I search for a definition, in the first few hits I get: "The use of illegal drugs or the use of prescription or over-the-counter drugs for pu

I’d refer you to the extensive research on the topic by David Nutt, Professor of Pharmacology at Imperial College and former government drugs adviser. It’s possible to compare the ‘relative harm’ of substances, and they will, partly by the

Not arguing that caution shouldn’t be applied but I think it’s a bit more subtle than that. MDMA is prone to abuse in the recreational use sense, but it’s not really habit forming in the same way other drugs are. Sure, you can always find e

Nodal based image editing is the standard in the film industry, though obviously there it’s predominantly used for sequences of images. Nuke is the industry standard, though there are a few others. I would agree it’s pointless if you just w

The only issue with iterative constraint solvers is the 'long chain' problem, where it's not possible to solve for longer stiff chains of constraints. Direct solvers can do it, but not with reasonable performance/memory

If gender is a social construct (an idea which I'm sympathetic to), shouldn't it just go away entirely? I'm happy to move towards a society where we abandon stereotypes of masculine and feminine behaviour, I just don't u

There are good reasons why both the VFX/post production and music production industries have done vast amounts of research into accurately modelling every 'imperfection' that resulted from the pre-digital processes. If you re

I think the point was that any large enough company will have a ton of politics related to decisions around technology, so one person's anonymous perspective shouldn't carry much/any weight.

I think the reason people are impressed is it's assumed the accuracy will improve quickly over time as architectures improve and the models increase in size, just as it did in other areas of machine learning like image classification.

I don't think Apple's strong arming me into using their store. I understand the deal, and I'm happy with it! I struggle to see how a free market for stores would improve my situation. Clearly the big software vendors won'

Yes exactly. If I thought Apple was trying to lock down the Mac in the same way, or shift away from the Mac I'd feel differently. But I see no evidence of that. I'm quite happy for my phone to remain an appliance.

I was holding out with my 6s until a month ago but finally jumped ship to a 13 mini. It's a great upgrade. Unfortunately staying on an old iOS version isn't possible since apps will start requiring iOS 16 at some point.
