There is no oppression, just no equal opportunities for all. However, a sufficiently motivated and able person can do well for themselves in the UK regardless of their background. They're just statistically unlikely to.

Agreed on all your points. However, the kids involved in this will come from homes that actively encourage them to shun all forms of authority and actively discourage betterment via education. They'll go on to have families of their own who

There are plenty of poor people in London, the vast majority of whom aren't looting shops. While I'd agree that the looters aren't likely ordering much from Amazon, I see no reason to think they lack homes or are 'on the farthest margins of

Yes, I read that earlier. What did you find insightful in it? The people involved aren't commenting on government policy. They're looting. I think some on the left are desperately trying to spin this as some sort of popular uprising but it'

It's considerably easier (IMO) to get started in web development than in iOS development. Web development has a fairly gentle learning curve and I personally know a bunch of people that started their careers hacking in php. iOS development

I'm not sure what point you're making. There were plenty of smartphones that existed before the iPhone. Many of them had icons and some had touch screens. None of them resembled the iPhone in 2007 any more than they resembled the Newton or

But Android OS doesn't resemble an iPaq, it resembles iOS. You keep inferring that everything presented in the original iPhone was an obvious extension of what we'd seen before, but it simply wasn't.

I find Google's stance here ingenuous. They're attempting to portray themselves as the persecuted innovator, but their behaviour in the market in question doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. While the patents Apple are using to attack Andr

Sure, but by a similar logic going from 0.1 to 0.2% represents 100% growth. But yes, I agree that Apple are very aware of the competition and the pitfalls of potentially losing marketshare. It would be silly for them to be otherwise. I just

From the article, HTC's market share growth in the given interval was 4%, compared to Apple's 3%. Considering they achieved that growth on significantly lower margins than Apple (and consequently much less revenue growth), I don't think it'

I also work in software development. Among my colleagues there are a mix of iPhone & Android users, but the divide seems primarily related to cost with the juniors much more likely to own Android. I've played with a few Android devices

Sadly, you will find that HN tends to be very anti-Android from a UI perspective. I read comments like this a lot, and I don't really understand them. There is no such thing as HN, just a bunch of people posting with differing opinions -

Could you give an example of where this would be the case? I write both Python and C++ code all day and I can't think of a single situation where I'd expect better performance from Python than a similar C++ implementation.

According to those results, 31% of android users are earning £10-20,000 vs 13% for iPhone. In the £20-30,000 category the positions are reversed. On the other hand, Symbian users seem to be even more affluent so I'm not sure this proves any
