A few straw men in this article. Most people in corporate life are expected to look busy when they aren’t, and put up the appearance of working long hours. There are plenty of larger companies you can work for where this isn't true.

I don't think it's a critical feature for a commercial renderer. - CPU renders typically might use 32Gb memory (or more). - most rendering is done on a render farm which won't have GPUs (unless you maintain a gnu render farm)

In the music industry, there are plenty of digital download services that offer convenient and reliable distribution of DRM free audio files. Yet it's commonly accepted that their business is still severely impacted by copyright infrin

This amounts to less of a privacy invasion than performed by Facebook or Google, to my mind. In addition, anyone that is under the impression their activities online are currently anonymous is mistaken. It's straightforward for rights

I'm fairly certain the industry understands the relationship between pricing and revenue. It's hardly a fair market when they're forced to compete with free though.

The difficulty for the Threes guys was that they spent a lot of time polishing what was a very simply concept. Nothing wrong with this, but it made their game straight forward to clone. If someone was releasing Tetris for the first time in

As I understand it, the depth map is created by slowly moving the camera while taking images of the same objects. It probably wouldn't work as well with a moving subject (even small movements).

Having viewed one of these mono 360 clips on an Occulus I would say it's a significant step up from watching it on a monitor. However you're right that a truly compelling experience will require full 3D reconstruction of the envir

Apps take longer to develop, require more skill & time investment For equivalent functionality/experience levels? That doesn't seem obvious to me.

Motion blur is a function of distance travelled in screen space per frame and shutter duration, which can be very short for go pro type cameras in bright sunlight. So I wouldn't necessarily expect obvious motion blur.

I see your point, but were I making a decision about what platform to use to build a mobile presence, I would focus on what provided the best user experience. Not what gave me the greatest initial coverage. If you can be successful on iOS o

I'd be surprised if the lack of WebGL is what's holding back mobile browser based games. I would imagine it's the relative difficulty in monetizing them vs the app store.

Do you really believe that the user is actually in control of the upgrades ? On iOS at least, it's (by default) a manual process to update an app. Having to code specifically for each device sounds like a benefit to you ? Benefit f

Very good point. It had one of the slowest app startup times on my iPhone 4 which for a conceptually simple tile puzzler that you play on the train is pretty bad.

I'm not going to argue that eradicating malaria is a bad thing, but it's inaccurate to infer that the only thing preventing the worlds extreme poor from being leaders of industry is good health.

Having used the DK1 it was obvious even with all the limitations that VR will be a dominant entertainment platform within a decade. It's simply too compelling to be anything other.

Well it's pretty hard to do PBR outside of a path tracer since energy conservation is a key concept.

What does 'orders of magnitude more advanced' mean? I would associate 'more advanced' with higher levels of abstraction. The fact that Android allows filesystem style access would make it less advanced in that sense. A u

I'm pretty certain iOS users on HN are aware of the inherent limitations of their devices. It's also easy to give examples of where the closed nature benefits users but it would be tedious to list them in every discussion.

Everyone has their own niche though. This is what Apple suffered from in the 90s - the long tail. Whatever you wanted to do, there was a Windows application that did it.
