It would be nice if I could use function pointers in hlsl. It would let me pass a pointers to distance functions around. Doing anything complicated with signed distance fields is a bit hairbrained without them.

Sure! I'd design it the same way I designed the text editor I'm making ( https://twitter.com/LeapJosh/status/1455511983512436737 ) Hit the minimums. Be irreverent, elevate the ordinary. Manifest intrigue

SA in the early 00's was really special. It was like someone dumped a whole chemical supply closet into a pot and brought it to a boil. Equal parts trash and alchemy. Gold was inexplicably made there, and as long as you had your kitty

Thanks! Yes the marketing is the most challenging part. I happen to enjoy showing my work off, I try to post a video a few times a week on twitter. ( https://twitter.com/LeapJosh ) The finer points of marketing still elude

You can handwave cycles created by symlinks away by ignoring them. Full traversal is possible relying only on the tree. If all you have is the digraph you have to rely on cycle detection. Transforming it into a hierarchy of depth requires s

This read resonates with me strongly. Especially that David Foster Wallace quote, about the sacrifices to get very good at one particular thing. After my last job, I decided to go all in on the childhood dream as an indie game maker. I knew

How do you transform a digraph with cycles into a tree without? Seems perilous.

This is an interesting thing I had never considered. There would be fascinating consequences for having twins, naming one Kip and the other Themistocles Aurelius.

I'm working on a Lovecraftian text editor game called Tentacle Typer. I'm hoping it will encourage people to write more prolifically and creatively. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1537490/Tentacle_Typ

Maybe off topic, but solving problems is a fraction of the joy I get from programming. Expression and personal power over reality are where I get the joy. A painter can create world and share a feeling. An author can manifests a memory. A m

Visual effects in games and movies is a direct usage. If I wanted to have a brick wall I could progressively melt with a large laser, I'd render it with an SDF. SDFs are good for anything with volume , as mesh based rendering is intri

It can, and it does, sort of! There's a bit more boilerplate in most environments designed for shipping things, but one of the more high power/terseness activities is writing a shader that can render signed distance fields. https
