On paper, tagging is objectively better for the reasons you describe. But in my experience, the human brain has an intuition for location and object-permanence which is confused by having the same thing in multiple places.

The other reply goes to airplanes but there are much more common ways to get disconnected. Locking my phone or closing my laptop lid disconnects me from IRC. A lot of Discord users have desktops that are always on (since Discord originally

I appreciate the author including the four different syntaxes of the same problem. Some syntaxes are more natural for some people depending on your experience, and I don’t think it takes away from the problem. On my final in a functional pr

I did an early project with only #ffffff, #000000, #ff0000, etc because I thought those were the most “pure” colors. It looked freaking awful. The best colors are ones that are subtly off of pure white and pure black; to the point where you

iMessage has an AppleScript API that makes it easy. I ran a game in school with something like 50 teams and I had a script to generate different objectives for each team and send them out by text automatically.

This is the correct answer. If you don’t know an error is possible you can’t write a good error message and if you know an error is possible you would (probably) fix it. So you (or the web framework you’re using) includes a generic 500 mess

Theres a Sci-Fi story called 17776 which features a sentient version of Juice as a main character. In this interpretation, Juice is a fan of Lunchables, so it would be a shame if they stopped production before Juice became sentient.

It’s weird to admit that this is an arbitrary dataset that doesn’t mimic real-world use cases, then admit that radix sort is far faster for this situation, then conclude that low-level optimizations are important and a cmov-wrapper should b

JavaScript is one of my favorite languages. It has the nearly unique design constraints of having multiple implementations and being unwilling to break backwards compatibility, which gives it a lot of warts that are easy to ridicule. But I

This has been discussed to death at this point, but I do have one comment, which is that I honestly still enjoy React. I love how JSX allows me to treat html components as values. I love the functional programming style of React components.

I’m not a fan of showbanning in general; it feels unethical to some degree. But HN has features like Show Dead, which allow you to opt-in to seeing [dead] posts (at around 15 karma I believe). This means [dead] posts and comments are not fu

I believe it’s a chapter in Monroe’s What If where I’ve seen this before. If I remember correctly, the area (0.1 square mm in your example) is the same as the cross sectional area of a tube 20 miles long containing your one gallon of gas.
