Dystopian? Yes. Unlikely? No. Right now you have US military personnel sitting at a desk in Ohio launching missiles from a drone in Afghanistan to kill bad guys. Why wouldn't they also use killer robots when they become available?

Not sure about Facebook, but Google don't yet look at my photo stream as much as I would expect. Recently I saw an ad for cat food even though I don't have a cat (and Google has all my photos going back 3 years).

I agree Google's revenue will not grow 20% annually forever, but I don't see any problem with my 10-year projection. When I watch YouTube I see about 30 seconds of ads for every 10 minutes of video content. I could easily see this

Good point - I missed that. Your comment reminds me of a story [1] about how a Google engineer once significantly reduced the size of the YouTube video page but average load times got worse . Turns out they were getting lots of new users f

I'm actually a Google shareholder and yes I do expect continued 20% growth, at least for the next decade. But increasing the ad/content ratio is only a small component of that growth. Here are my estimates for the major component

Part of the gap can be explained by: (1) Increasing income of internet users, (2) The average user spending more time on the internet, (3) Google getting more effective at matching advertisers with Google users

Wow. Yesterday it seemed that most people on HN felt level 4 self driving on public roads was at least 5 years away. Today that estimate needs to be revised. Seems the future is coming faster than we thought.

Although most of its sales are outside the US, I believe that in reality Apple generates the vast bulk of its profit in the US - specifically in California. Let's say an iPhone is sold in the UK, generating a $200 profit. How much

My point is that almost all of Apple's profit is in reality generated in California, even if its sales and accounting profits are booked overseas. So I'm comparing US-based profit with the US Federal tax rate. Let's say an

Income before tax: $13.9 billion Income tax: $3.2 billion So Apple's effective tax rate is 23%. Honestly that's better than I expected, but still less than it should be. Federal corporate income tax is 35% and California adds 8.

Even with the side effects and risks it might make sense for almost everyone who is aged 60 to take aspirin every day. There is now good evidence [1] that if 10,000 people aged 60 took aspirin for 20 years there would be: 174 fewer deaths
