I rarely read such grossly misinformed posts on HN. A shame you spent so long on it.

This is a very poor idea. Unless you want to keep the community frozen as is, you can't NOT show visitors the real site. If that were the case I'd probably stop coming myself.

So all the torture, repression, and extreme poverty during the Pinochet era was worth is huh? And there HAS been socialist change since Pinochet. I can't believe you'd hold Chili under Pinochet up as an example of what to do. Good lord.

This is a straw man argument. Saying "now everything is a Ponzi scheme" doesn't address his point that we're going to have to start looking at how a global steady state economy will work. He isn't saying Capitalism isn't the best system, he

Well said. The latest version of PHP is going to have lambdas, and I'm quite certain that it's not a Lisp.

Interestingly the higher taxes will in part be used to raise the standard of education which will result in a more dynamic and entrepreneurial work force, which will in turn result in more business owners looking for employees. He simply so

I'm Canadian living in Vancouver and certainly do NOT get taxed 50%. In fact, my income tax (percentage) now is less than it was a year and a half ago when I lived and worked in New York city.

What if I'm an anything else coder and I want to support Mac? Forget license, I need to buy a new machine. Linux is the only really painless platform to support if you're not using it.

How about the fact that all American plans come with free national long distance. That's unheard of in Canada. You get billed long distance for calling a city an hour away.

I generally agree with the article, though I find it a little disingenuous coming from Gizmodo. I mean, these are the guys that are feeding the fire and lambasting companies for holding products back to fix buggy software/hardware. It's par

My preferred DBMS is Postgres, but I have to use MySQL at work. I can honestly say that moving to MySQL after Postgres is a serious downer. What happens when you want referential integrity alongside fulltext indexes? An ugly database.

How many people in this world can afford a computer to learn to type on? Along that vein, how many schools in the US can afford to equip each student with a full time computer (since they won't be able to write notes down)? Get grounded in

Browse through the Zend Framework. I don't know why more people don't recommend it as a well written large size PHP code base. It's a little exception happy but that's more of a style issue.
