I read a post on Mastodon today about how Microsoft treated GPL things after Balmer was out and they were doing the “we love Linux” stuff. The point that matters here is the law doesn’t really matter if you can outspend your opponent by six

Apple has a long and contentious relationship with Qualcomm, and Qualcomm is big enough and important enough Apple couldn’t bully them into doing what they want. I think it makes a lot of sense for Apple to control their own destiny there.

I don’t see that as the biggest point. I really don’t have much interest in playing normal games in VR. I could see how a kid might want that on Quest when they don’t have their own TV. And it might be nice on a plane. But $1000 is a lot fo

> The DMA requires interoperability so it requires being able to swap out Siri - completely I fully agree. But Apple is not willing to do that, and I don’t blame them. I actually think they’re right on that one personally, even though it

No what I was trying to say is it’s not listening for anything it can sell ads against, it’s set to trigger on a specific word. The rest of the phone has no idea you’re talking until the processor recognizes the water word (possibly by mist

Has anyone made multi-story manufactured homes? Most homes in my area have two (3 with basement), traditional single story ranch doesn’t make good use of the limited land. So if multiple floors aren’t available they’re not an option for a g

It’s 100% about the quality of the ideas, isn’t it. I agree no ideas is just a path towards irrelevance.

Apple had enough experience relying on and being screwed by third parties that they have a built-in allergy to it. They do not like being boxed in and always want to be in control of their destiny. This would’ve been useful during their bak

That’s gone in 27. You can still ask ChatGPT by prefixing your request with “ask ChatGPT“ like you’ve been able to for the last two years or so. But it will never prompt you anymore, because Siri AI can handle that stuff now when it couldn’

Yes. Besides, if you swapped out the thing underneath, you would still get the UI and branding of Siri. I don’t think that would meet the requirements of the DMA. Would it?

Apple proposed a solution to the EU after reportedly extensive talks and asked the EU if it would satisfy them. The EU said “build it then we’ll tell you”, which is crazy. The problem is not having Siri use different models beneath. That’s

There’s a reason everyone knows the various wake words. All the big companies know how suicidal that would be. They already get accused of it by people who don’t understand how targeted web advertising works. Some of the new AI start-ups do

That’s obviously the people who are really using it, but I assumed you had to pay Apple to get it. So either you made your own measurements or if you were doing Made For iPhone and they would give it to you as part of that program which sur

I can’t help but think that’s because they don’t know any better and maybe because they’re getting better informed by the reporting than what they’re actually getting from management. Which would be terrible if true.

The rumor I saw when all this started implied it was. I think it said that Mullenweg always came back from burning man with lots of ideas. The implication to me was the ideas were terrible and the board was afraid of having to deal with it

It isn’t. But it should be. I find online advertising crooked as hell. Google charges by the impression and knowingly allows huge percentages of fake impressions. How is that anything other than fraud? It’s not because it’s online advertisi
