This doesn’t seem to cover the ‘social’ or community side of software freedom though. Sure you have the freedom to make life tough for your future self for short term gain - but by embracing non-free software you are ultimately limiting the

Isn’t ’giving up convenience in the name of freedom’ one of the core trade-offs you’re expected to make with free software? People buy into the ‘free’ bit of FOSS to varying degrees of course but it is disappointing that so many FOSS proje

It’s an interesting piece - but yet another one lamenting annoying ads blocking screens - while showing an annoying ad that blocks your screen.

Has this aggressive churning ever actually produced a successful product at google? From the outside it’s hard to see how incentivising it is of any benefit to the company?

100% agree - there is so much similarity between those projects. They will be defended to the hilt but you only start to see the tangled vines when you try to build something without them. If you try to pull them out all other software goes

Where is this nuance articulated on their site? All I see is mention that it can be used as a ‘fully featured stack’ or ‘pick and choose’?

I tracked some issues raised when Zoom was trying to get screenshare working with Gnome and Wayland. It was pretty clear the Gnome devs had no interest in UX feedback for video-conferencing apps. And people wonder why those apps suck on Lin

There are many reasons artists make their work available for others - enriching hustlers who crap on the artist’s work while making a buck is probably low on the list though.

Yes artists - on small scale and often with some form of attribution or acknowledgement. This is industrial scale copying - often with some other motivation than creativity alone and with active steps taken to avoid even having to think abo

My reading of it was more ‘I think they shouldn’t do that’ rather than ‘we are going to try to stop them doing that’. A morality vs legality kind of thing.

This BMI compiler dependency seems quite the limitation, surely this was a chance to tidy and unify name mangling. So we can’t import binaries across even minor compiler version changes?!

Porting existing codes is still a massive effort and there is low faith in long-term support from Google based software and hardware. I’m not aware on much (any) TPU use in scientific HPC.
