So maybe this is nitpicky, but it's the difference between books I buy and books I don't. In the 'Technical Debt and Slop' excerpt, there is an example about determining whether an order is free. Basically it compares th

My wife spent about half a year in North Carolina for work, where "y'all" seemed to translate to the singular "you", while "all y'alls" was used to refer to "you" plural.

One trick I've learned to avoid getting your hand crushed: instead of keeping your index finger connected to your middle finger, extend it along the other person's wrist. It gives your hand a stronger shape, and it's harder for the other pe

Except you have 2 variables - puppy/no puppy; and copy A/copy B, and therefore 4 combinations. You only tested two combinations, so you have no way of knowing if the puppy or the alternate copy was the reason for the increase.

I'm not sure where this reputation that Minnesota is some sort of cultural wasteland comes from. If you ask people associated with the arts, many of them will tell you that Minneapolis has an exceptionally vibrant arts community. Outstandi

I think even "casual misogyny" is hyperbole, given the original comment that sparked this whole mess. I think the worst you can say about it is that it was crude and unprofessional. The hateful aftermath, though, clearly should not be tole

It's not the humidity in Minnesota and upper plains winters that gets you, it's the wind. 15-20 degrees is chilly, but perfectly manageable. However, add a stiff breeze to that and it becomes truly cold. Add wind to <0 F temps and it b
