When your ear is ready to match against one of 26 known phonetics, it is possible to do so even with very high noise. I might only pick up “...orm” but I’ll know it’s “uniform” (U) because it couldn’t be the other 25.

What timing! I’ve been annoyed by this for a while and just yesterday wrote IT about the absurd permission request to “Connect” and asking for some way to turn it off. Based on this post I think I know what their answer will be.

Oh definitely. It’s just a little less bad then shutting down current students, which would make no sense at all (they’re already not in the brick-and-mortal system so there’s no funding moving).

An important clarification that came out after the linked article: "Earlier in the week, we had some misinformation come out that made it look like we had to close, and then we had formal guidance come out yesterday evening that said,

I was mulling over that sentence too. While I’d probably not characterize them as rude per se, those little pings do intrude more than, say, adding another upvote on the issue. I already know there is a lot more that I’d like to do than hav

One instance of this I've struggled with (mainly b/c online comms is hard) is when people publicly post that they're annoyed about a confusing thing. "OMG why does it take 10 clicks to do X". This often prompts solu
