But you don't understand, I once had to replace chart.js 3 with chart.js 4 and the documentation didn't cover all of the changes. This man would have collapsed into a heap if he'd had to face the challenges I've faced.

I'm sorry but the line of business software most of us work on is not more impressive than writing a major component of a file system from scratch.

I would love a more systematic approach to this none-coding part of coding. I mean I doodle little diagrams and write notes on scrap paper but nothing so rigorous as what Andre is doing.

As someone who constantly likes to amuse himself by making funny (even if only to me) remarks - some of which make their way here and get flagged! - it has nothing to do with hiding or coping with sadness. I have zero energy for wise cracki

I more meant "I didn't worry about the bit with the algorithm". The first bit of the paper is everything it's cracked up to be.

So cool to see people getting into the classics! IIRC Lamport himself said in the second bit of Time Clocks, the algorithm was wrong, so I didn't worry too much about it.

I've gotten a lot of value by going to a topic I don't understand on wikipedia, finding the oldest paper they cite, and printing it out. Sometimes I only finish half the paper, but damned if I haven't learned a lot. Disclaime

This isn't some "pro-trump" thing. It is the idea that people think they were anywhere close to a regime change. It would be funny if it wasn't so contemptible. As for the so called leaders in the building that day, I ha

You raise an interesting point. It could just be - to my ears and sensibilities - that Americans have a very low bar for what they call an insurrection or rebellion.

The LISP 1.5 Programmers manual! Love this one. Your 2) is what Alan Kay called "Maxwell's Equations of Software". And you're right, there's absolute magic in old computing papers. They were pioneers. I wish we coul

I see Jan 6 as something much more like the Sunflower movement in Taiwan, where protestors (or alternately rioting insurrectionists) actually occupied the chambers of the Taiwans unicameral legislature. No one was shot or skilled, despite a

Off duty police officers? OK I'm wrong it was practically Bastille. They were moments away from making it to the Rotunda, and at that point they could have immediately started legislating and the US as we know it would have ended. Than

Posting a NY Times article in response to Jan 6 is like posting a Russia Today article in response to Maidan. Also, I don't have a subscription.

After all these years I still can't take the term "Jan 6 Insurrection" seriously. Not only did it pose zero threat (no military support, no political support, no police support), the most notable act of violence was one of th

No. I'm tired of machines trying to be friendly and cute with me. Be short, curt, and polite. Like a Star Trek original series computer. We're not friends, and you're not my equal, you're a damn program. Act like it.

Which of these were egregious in your opinion? Just through a random wikipedia list, I found Oppenheimer (if not an outright member of the communist party, very closely aligned) and Needham (who had agreed to be an Inspector in North Korea)

One of those things that I always thought was a great idea, and it's fantastic to see someone actually working on it. AST editing really is the next step for modal editors IMO.

I ran my own client side script to strip out links to such articles. New computer, didn't copy the script over, and now I'm engaged in passive aggressive discussions over some guardian article. It's my own weakness of course,

I think the chances of a human being existing who knows enough about a specific topic that they can write a paper about it, and who is also an exceptionally clear writer, is pretty low. So if you want the knowledge, you go in knowing this.

We're arguing in a comment thread for guardian journospam. Everything about this interaction is entirely irrelevant and unneeded.
