I'm working as a SW Engineer in Spain. None of my acquaintances in the sector (with relevant experience) have any problems in finding a job. Even people that got laid off were able to secure a new position in a relatively short time. M

Yup. IEEE 1558-2004. I might be wrong, but I believe "Software Engineering" is a more common concept in Europe than US, since many "Computer Science" degrees are actually part of Engineering Universities curricula. That

Agreed. Yet, the parent is talking about "programming", that is still the most important part (although still a part) of a Software Engineering project. Software Engineering is a recognized discipline, and although I do work in an

Same here. I´m still unsure if it's a path I want to follow indefinitely, but I agree with the parent that going out of your comfort zone presents you with a whole new set of challenges, which are not necessarily easier or more boring

"There is no engineering in programming." It really depends on the industry and context. Part of me really envies you if you can say that much and that reflects your experience. I spent most of today making sure that my SPMP, SQAP

I find much harder to justify Apple (as an Apple user) then Ubuntu for doing this. Ubuntu is free (technically also Yosemite is, but it´s part of the Apple HW/SW package), and what it does it´s not so different than a Laptop manufactur

I think that it´s an easy position to take. If the government sides with Uber it loses the money he get from the (outrageously expensive, like you said) licenses, and has a lot of unhappy voters (taxi drivers). What would it gain ? Better s

The parent post was challenging the definition of "mediocre". Given that such "mediocre" universities are able to sustain one of the most powerful economies in the world, they must not be so mediocre.

I think it also depends on the degree. How many graduates in Political Sciences and Literature are there ? How many job openings that require this specific knowledge ? Most of my collegues graduating with me in Electronics were working in I

Your analysis is very black and white, and reality is probably more nuanced, but I generally agree that Europeans tend to be more risk averse than Americans. It is also true that something as "simple" as starting your own company

I wonder if it really makes sense comparing a language that is less than one year old to others that have decades of improvements and fine tuning behind them . If there was a perfect language, all of us would be using it: each one is the re

I was wondering if you can actually find flats that small. While I was looking here in Madrid, the least I could find were 20/25 m2 flats. Regardless, as someone that has shared the author's pains multiple times, kudos to him for

"Reasonnable means that the rent doesn’t exceed 800€ for a 15m² flat" Is living in 15 m² reasonable ? I live in a studio of about 30 m² and I find it claustrophobic at times.
