Good UI is hard, but it's also a solved problem since at least 25 years and idiots keep reinventing "solutions" the wrong way over and over again. I see developers frequently make mistakes that Windows 95 got right.

People don't make sites like Nerve anymore. No one can. This is nonsense. Anyone can make such a site if they put their mind to it. You just have to find your way around the internet to get to the good stuff.

Unfortunately, the reality is never as simple as that. Your makefile will grow like a tumour once your project grows: Specific dependencies, OS and compiler related flags and switches, special folder structures, etc etc.

Yeah that was so weird, out of place and uncalled for? What do they even want to say with this? Can't they focus on, you know, the topic of the book, Professional Software Development? This is so unprofessional.

I don't believe it. I would have to conduct this experiment myself and see the actual reaction with my own eyes to believe it. I cannot imagine that knowledge about a smell is passed down to a descendant. Or have an explanation for the

Yes. I set that up at work and the core dumps of release binaries became infinitely easier to debug. One thing I noticed with gcc and optimised release binaries is that the debug information gets incredibly large the more you optimise. With

> "It's never caused a problem before" isn't a reason to ignore best practices and not work defensively. It is if working defensively is costlier than replacing the odd broken part.

Ipe is fantastic. I used it for technical images in my thesis and papers and the graphics turn out beautifully despite the program being so simple.

Wrapping up As the article was quite long, here a summary of the main points: - The “regular expressions” used by programmers have very little in common with the original notion of regularity in the context of formal language theory. - Reg

I think polygraphs are an American thing in general. In Central Europe you literally never hear about them. I think the population believes they are bogus, so they're unpopular.

I updated my Nvidia graphics driver and that fixed the issue. It's probably a case of Minecraft using the OpenGL API wrong and the driver needing to compensate for this broken usage of the API.

The Java runtime is bundled with minecraft. I use 64-bit and I use the same JRE everyone else uses.

Instead of open sourcing code, they should fix the Aquatic update. All Minecraft versions after 1.13 are literally unplayable for me (mid to high end gamer PC) due to freezes. Every 5 seconds, the game freezes for two seconds for me. Increa

I can tell you some of that. We ported all our applications from QNX6.5 to QNX6.6 and then QNX7.0. They deprecated some POSIX calls like posix_spawn_file_actions_addopen (at least in QNX6.6 documentation they mention it's not fully imp

Yes. I work with QNX6.6 daily. I also worked with QNX6.5 and QNX7.0. It's a real blast to work with the mikrokernel. It's a really cool system, and the kernel stability is excellent. Feels good that when a low level driver crashes

Why not just double-buffering the DOM? That'd be much simpler. Mutate your DOM all you want, then swap it in when it's ready.

GDPR is a disaster. Look at those websites, now after cookie disclaimers you have popups with "privacy" options. I don't see how they ever built good rep.

Lobste.rs is basically Hacker News without intransparent moderating based on whims, liberofascist social justice warriors, stalinists and feminazis. I like browsing it, but it doesn't have as much activity as Hacker News.

A command latency over 30ms hurts a lot. And I don't even play competitively. 250ms was not noticed? Absolute nonsense. A quarter of a second is gigantic when it comes to latency.
