That fucking popup is the thing that finally drove me to drop Chrome and go back to Firefox on my home PC. Of course, now Mozilla is starting to go all in on extension signing too, so the joke's on me.

Certainly an impressive result, and may have some practical application for easing the burden of repeatedly answering the same question asked in different ways. I'm not sure I would call this passing the Turing test though. The pictu

Not sure how I feel about this. I guess that's cool and all, but I'd rather have Steam be focused on just games. Can't see myself ever really wanting to do this. I was never really a huge fan the (non-game) software sectio

I agree, but let's be fair here. Porn brings much more value to the world than Taboola and Outbrain could ever hope for.

I agree, that analogy is way off base. Disregarding the fact that the way it's set up makes Portal, Braid, and Dragon Age sound like failures, which is the complete opposite of the truth, it totally ignores the different business mode

Another jdownloader user here. I have similar misgivings about its trustworthiness, but so far I haven't found any concrete reasons to distrust it other than that vague sense of unease. It's just so damn useful though!

Unfortunately, when UO was big my internet connection was too spotty for online games so I never got the chance to experience that (though that might be a good thing...). In the past few years though I had a lot of fun with another game ca

That shift to linked "interest" pages was what killed it for me as well. My music section used to be a nicely formatted list categorized by genre sometimes with individual songs or composers. Then the change hit and they totally

I couldn't agree more. I joined thefacebook in 2004 and at the time it was a great way to connect with peers and get to know a bit about how they think and what their interests are. (Remember when clicking on a movie title or band na

Interestingly, I thought that was exactly the case at first. Since the domain of the link is actually signalvnoise.com, Privacy Badger blocks most of the requests to medium.com and leaves the article as unstyled text. I would have been pe

I honestly have no idea. Chat bot mania sure seems to be in full swing though. Call me cynical, but all I can see is a lot of tech and development hours desperately in search of a problem to solve.

To be fair, that's more of a case for "GPS for Dogs". The use case described in the article comes off as quite a bit more frivolous: > Whistle’s GPS Pet Tracker makes it easier to keep tabs on your pet’s fitness, with a

Glad that I'm not the only one who dislikes the new style. They do have one advantage - they seem to be solvable 100% of the time (at least for now). In every other aspect though I find them to be way more annoying than the old ones.

I really think that the importance of all that extra stuff is massively overstated. I do a large amount of browsing while in incognito mode without being signed in to a Google account and I have NEVER been able to pass one of the new reCAP

That's a step in the right direction, but you're still only allowed to install extensions from the Google-owned Chrome Web Store.

I actually started playing Warframe a couple months ago and have been pleasantly surprised by the game's level of quality while still having a relatively player-friendly business model. I've only spent around $30 and that's

At this point, even total nothingness would be preferable. The mobile games ecosystem has become so bloated and malignant that we may as well just amputate the infected limb, cauterize the wound, and try to move on.

Maybe "conspiracy" is too strong a word, but I have no doubt that the key motivation behind all these algorithmic changes is to boost ad metrics rather than to better serve the users. (Free services, users, products, etc)

Yes, but there's still nothing preventing someone from DVRing a TV show and then manually fast forwarding through the commercials. I'm sure advertisers would love to put a stop to that too, but it really can't be done unless

Neat idea, I'd love to see this take off. I imagine it's going to take a lot of work to reach Imdb-level comprehensiveness though. Until a certain threshold is met, it's going to be hard to beat Googling (person's name

I think ad blockers will "destroy" the web in the same way that file sharing "destroyed" the entertainment industry. There will be skirmishes back and forth with no clear victor until new platforms spring up which allow

So we should just give up, sit back, and take whatever the ad networks see fit to cram down our throats? No thanks. Also, I wouldn't put so much faith in the ability of advertising companies to completely stop adblocking. Similar thi
