Can you one product or process where it’s indispensable? I’m not being argumentative, just curious, as I’m not a chemist. I know it’s already being replaced in ski waxes and I’m pretty sure they have alternatives for firefighting foams?

Can you name one essential application where PFAS is really necessary? Something where society would actually be substantially worse without it. I’m not talking about ski wax here.

It’s right there in the article. 3M have already been sued over this.

Because the regulators weren’t stupid. They knew an overnight ban would ground flights (impacting jobs, economy in remote areas etc) so they gave the industry some leeway. I can only assume that current regulators don’t have an incentive to

I can’t find that in the article. Do you have a source for it? Regular gore-Tex is still on the market and it’s also based on PTFE so I must assume it’s the special formulations in Shakedry that are now banned. I e whatever PFOA is.

Not sure what point you’re trying to make with that. I don’t know this stuff but I know how too look it up on Wikipedia, and it looks to me like it was phased out because regulators threatened a ban: “In November 2008, National Air Transpor

The ski waxes use pretty small amounts, as I understand it. Anyway, they are indeed being phased out from ski waxes in many places/contexts. The FIS are phasing them out from all competitive skiing, to begin with.

I can’t reconcile that with what the OP states: "While the Shakedry fabric has been great for its characteristics as a cycling jacket (waterproofness, breathability and lightweight), the membrane also contains PFOA [ed. Perfluorooctan

If the article is right, Shakedry is also heavily treated with perflourated toxic stuff. On the outside, presumably.

I don’t think the material lasts long enough to have multiple users. My experience of ptfe and related chemicals is that they wash out and the material degrades over time worth wear, so they don’t stay water-repellent very long. If they did

You realize this stuff is actually /toxic/, right? Can you come up with a single incentive that would make the industry invent non-toxic alternatives faster than a ban on the toxic substances would?

Apple phones are full of features. Most of them cost nothing beyond the cost of entry (iPhones are expensive). Presumably all these well engineered features contribute to some holistic image of a “quality product”, whatever that means. You

I find it interesting that this blog is categorized as "Security Risk" by Cloudflare Radar, which my employer is using for web filtering. Hopefully it's just a temporary glitch due to being an unknown/new domain.

Come to Scandinavia. We are blessed with almost no “stall” type restrooms. Wherever there’s multiple toilets, they’re each in a separate proper tiny room. The exceptions seem to mostly be older fast food places and roadside taverns.

Have you ever tried to remove a fungus from soil? I think it would require machinery to dig up the whole field, process the soil and spit it out - which I think is no less expensive than using traditional chemical methods for binding the me

I’ve seen code guidelines where this article’s asserts would be unacceptable. If I saw this error in a test output, I’d be pretty miffed that it doesn’t tell me what the expected and actual values are. Actual status code: NotFound.

Plastic also gets knife marks. I think the difference is the plastic goes in the dishwasher. But you’re right, I also read that news piece about wood being slightly antiseptic.
