Modern SoC design with buses and switch fabrics - AMBA for example seems not be taught that much. Clock domain crossing methods. And clocking, PLLs, clock distribution, reset strategies etc. HW/SW co-design with CPUs acting as control

I think Cliff Cummings have really good explanations, motivations for this: http://www.sunburst-design.com/papers/CummingsSNUG2003SJ_Sys... http://www.sunburst-design.com/papers/CummingsSNUG2000Bos

Not so sure. There are questions related to pipelining, combinational tree loads, retiming etc. For backend ASIC stuff this is valuable things to know and understand. I would say quite a few of the material are quite far from trivial. If SW

Pretty good collection of questions. A bit weird with the the huge, hand drawn figures here and there in the questions section. Sometimes they seem to be illustrations, sometimes a partial solution. Cool to see time borrowing included in th

Way back in 2003 or so, we at my old company InformAsic designed a single chip transparent VPN solution for serial communication (RS-232, RS-422). The control and protocol handling part of the was a modified 6502 core with a sort of MMU and

If you want to see some FPGA emulator monsters, look at Cadence Palladium, or Mentor/Siemens Veloche. https://www.cadence.com/en_US/home/tools/system-design-and-v... https://eda.sw.siemens.com

In general yes. ASIC designs are prototyped using FPGAs. You often can't run at full clock speed. But can do orders more test cycles than in a simulator. But FPGAs are also used as final target technology. When volume is too low, time

So true. The code describes real hardware - wires, gates, registers, memory macros. And those are finite resources. The FPGA tools allocate resources and map them to specific instances on the FPGA chip. In an ASIC there are more freedom, bu

You don't have that fancy stuff in really low cost, embedded systems, or as part of the control path in a large, complex FPGA or ASIC design. Look at ARM Cortex M0+, M3, M4 or numerous RISC-V cores for microcontroller applications. You

Could you elaborate on the "1990 style"? What do you mean? Is it that it is a moderately pipelined, single issue, RISC like (explicit load/store, fixed width instructions, fairly large register file) CPU design? Why then, all

It is not a program. It is a hardware design tuned to be efficiently mapped onto the primitives/resources in the specific FPGA fabric of the target devices. I'm fairly sure the actual source code is far from little. But the number

The Nios II is quite old. When II/e was designed you had basically the PicoBlaze as competition. In comparison the Nois II/e SW can be compiled using gcc and have less constraints on code size. The point of these very small CPU co

I really didn't grasp the size of that drone. It is not a little model boat, it is a ship. This video shows it being launched, and includes images of what it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ-uYy9Ap8A

That was imho a good article. As far as I understood, it did not argue that math should be thrown out and replaced because it was created, discovered by white men. It did state that students need to study math as a subject itself.
