> Pew Research Center defines middle-class or middle-income households as those with incomes that are two-thirds to double the 2016 U.S. median household income of $57,617. According to this formula, Pew determined that middle-class Am

It was expensive because it was at an Ivy League school. Most masters students at Ivy League schools do not receive any form of financial aid. It's basically a money printing machine for the university, and I fell for it. I could'

This is why I don't use AWS for personal projects (S3 is the only one I'd consider using). EC2 for example is significantly more expensive than a Digital Ocean droplet.

Great article, and the same dynamic applies to all genders. I was listening to a podcast the other day where a founder said that the most successful people he knew (eg. entrepreneurs) all had the worst family lives - multiple marriages, bad

I made the mistake too, going $128k in debt to pursue a unrelated master's degree at an Ivy only to end up pursuing software engineering. Are your loans from the government? If so, you can likely qualify for the Pay-as-you-earn program

I'd be that most Ivy League students have parents making more than $130-150k combined, probably substantially more. That's only a middle class income, and at least anecdotally most Ivy League students I know tend to come from uppe

I don't know why you're getting so defensive as I'm simply providing an anecdote from a documentary I just watched. I'm happy that your experience at the factory wasn't dangerous. In the documentary some of the work

People should be able to pursue whatever work they want so long as it doesn't harm anyone else since we can afford it.

Yes it's a ludicrous notion that working for work's sake is a good thing. I just watched the documentary "American Factory" (highly recommended), and it's pretty clear to me that doing repetitive manual labor work i

No it's not. Low unemployment is a result of a system that forces people into employment to make a living (not to mention how skewed the statistics are when they consider part-time workers seeking full-time opportunities as "emplo

Mark seems to be embracing remote work here citing how it can help alleviate skyrocketing housing costs, yet Facebook doesn't hire remote workers. He's in a position to start an industry trend here by putting his money where his m

Because Facebook pays a lot more money and hire more people. If Bill Gates would pay me six figures to end poverty, I'd quit engineering and take him up on that offer. Unfortunately I have student loans to pay off.

Don't forget student loans. Having six figures in student loans simply from getting a masters degree is enough to make one almost consider abandoning the U.S, especially when you consider that the older generation who caused this never

As an ex-New Yorker, the MTA has a horrible reputation in NYC (at least last time I lived there) due to its complete mismanagement of the subway. It's pathetic that they're devoting their resources to copyright trolling. Intellect

I'd estimate that 90% of developers are working on CRUD apps, if you work on algorithms in your day job you are definitely in the minority.

The author makes a very weak argument, not even listing any examples. There is no modern framework that is 2-3MB, that is absurd. The whole point of SPAs is to increase performance. Sure there are sites with horrible implementations of SPAs

Programmer salaries are only especially high in the U.S. and a few other countries. In most countries, programmers don't get paid anywhere close to what SV engineers make. In the U.K. for example, programmers start at ~$32k/yr. I

The problem is that we're often expected to make our career our identity. If you don't, then you get passed over for a promotion/hire while the workaholic gets a promotion. This problem is especially acute in the U.S. where o
