I got my first taste of functional programming with Erlang. Honestly, it had me befuddled for quite some time with pattern matching and the "functional" style; I was used to using objects to encapsulate rather than "modules" and "functions"

It should. I've known a few people that inhaled Nitrous recreationally (which is known for depleting B12 very rapidly); it was a common side effect (other than it being an anxiolytic) that you would lose sensation in your outer extremitie

Good reply, I don't know too much about the ins and outs; just layman reading and anecdotal experience. I remember being chronically fatigued (though it was not Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) for quite some time; what did the trick for me was si

Sounds like Chronic Fatique Syndrome to me. My advice: cut simple carbohydrates out of your diet completely (veggies and animal protein only) and start exercising as much as your fatigue allows you. Read this book too: http://www.amazon.co

I think there is a defined line between obsequiousness and appreciation. I feel the tone of my post actually leaned on the side of appreciation than it did "obedient or servile". I suppose that any sort of "Thank you" statement could be tak

I up voted you because you're correct. It would have easily sufficed as an email to PG. However, the impact of appreciating something and having communal pooling of appreciation affirms the intent. I want HN to remain what it is and I did

What's interesting, is that Hacker News does generate revenue in a very indirect way. By cultivating a hacker community around his early stage investment company he is ensuring there will always be top-notch thinkers and doers participati

For communication purposes, Amateur radio would be the most common and accessible. Although, I have a feeling the internet would be much more resilient than it may be given credit for; it just might not be a World Wide Web, maybe a Regio

Emerson is one of my favorite authors. I think his philosophy on creative output/self-expression is just as applicable for writing as it is for programming; programming to me, is the ardent beauty and cogency of the [programmer's] thoughts

Agreed, frame of mind is important! If you are bored, then keep producing more value with that extra time; people will talk about you if you are creating things that are high quality, refined, and useful.

This is a good point, but still, I'm sure a "properly sized" explosive that wasn't nuclear could do the trick too. I'm ignorant here: if a nuclear device were to be used wouldn't it irradiate the surrounding water? Wouldn't fallout plumes i

Why a nuke? If you're going to use something explosive to collapse the well, I'm sure there are many other options available that would provide enough "oomph" to collapse that well. A "nuke" sounds like overkill and exaggeration.

That isn't a bad idea at all. Since connecting a pipe is largely impossible because of the high pressure, maybe anchoring a larger flexible canopy over the well site to contain sub-sea plumes and funnel it to a couple of outputs would work.

I would imagine just "putting a cylinder" over the leak would not contain it. To begin with, the floor of the ocean isn't a solid surface, there's a lot of mud which means the opening to the hole isn't "clean cut" - any kind of "well" uses

I can agree with this sentiment, there's also nothing wrong with writing a parser that breaks the input up into pieces and validates those individual parts using specialized regular expressions.

Thank you for posting this, I'm a contractor looking for work; this looks to be a bit more niche than ELance et al (you have to request an invite to be listed!).
