Yep, fair point, your mentioning Steve Jobs made sense in the context of the article (good article by the way, I agree about engineers tending to undervalue decent sales guys). I don't know about babarock, but I was thinking more of the "10

Yes, couldn't agree more. I agree with the people that say that future generations will see Steve Jobs as revolutionary a businessman as Henry Ford. But this hagiography has got to stop. Let's put things in perspective. Steve Jobs made real

I upvoted you for being a voice of reason. I also find it interesting how much the startup community in general hates on MBAs, and yet they also know so little about finance. (I don't know much about finance, either, but from just a little

Yes, that's probably a better formulation of the question. I wonder if YC already tracks this, maybe informally? It would be a good means of testing their own selection processes. Then again, they probably focus more on the "false positives

"Not always. I mean, isn't this the reasoning behind the first dot-com bubble? At some point you have to turn a (operational) profit, and the more money you invest, the more profit you have to turn in order to recoup your investment." Yes.

A very dumb article. A shame, as it seems the author did have some interesting insights, but missed the main point completely. Bezos is a very, very smart guy. He's the closest thing we have to Steve Jobs right now. (Though that's not reall

Interesting - I wrote an article a few weeks ago exploring this very same premise: http://blog.i.saac.me/post/what-if-bittorrent-was-invented-b... (Apologies for self quoting) Let’s try a thought experiment. Let’s say that BitTorrent, or

I tried Tim Ferris' "media fast" idea recently, though I only lasted 2 days (he recommends a week). No surfing, magazines, books, newspaper, TV... I noticed I was bored, but I also felt that maybe it was good to be bored, at least once in a

"For example, the idea of a minimum viable product doesn't really work too well with Hardware." Actually, it does, if you make your MVP a little more minimal. Put up a sales page for the product, attract traffic with Google AdWords, and see

I actually disagree with most of the comments here, and agree with the article. I recently had the same realisation that the article author did: that much more innovation seemed to have happened in the years 1870-2010 than the years 1972-20

Woz has also said in the past that he thought Android would won the mobile wars. As he's still technically an employee of Apple, I bet that their PR team really love him. He does just seem to be a genuinely guileless person (in the original

My perspective is you should listen to what your users say, but treat that as just one piece of input into what you do. Ie, rather than this: what we do = what users tell us It should be: what we do = f(what users tell us, x) Where f is you

Let's see, I have 33, count em, subfolders in my /prj directory. 4 are folders for random hacks or experiments I do (eg, one for Ruby, one for Clojure, two for misc stuff). So I won't count them. 5 are random admin stuff, so I won't count t

People are being way too negative about this. So, they were a pair of "idea guys" who failed to execute and then managed to grab more than their fair share of the latest Valley success story. Does this warrant their eternal membership in th

I like the quote "Digg is a service similar to Trejdify" posted on blog.trejdify.com. I'm guessing Digg, even now, is quite a bit bigger than Trejdify. Let's take a look at the submitter: SuperChihuahua "creator of Trejdify.com". Classy.

Very true -- I realised that blogging isn't actually that much more effort than writing comments. Now that I've started blogging regularly, I think my average post length is only slightly longer than my average comment length.

I'd rework Paul Graham's list a little, as the first two items are phrased in negative terms (it's easier to do stuff than to not do stuff). " Follow your dreams; take a break; say what you think; cultivate friendships; be happy." The idea

I would say the advice should be: don't offer equity too soon. I've met some random "business guys" at conferences who offer me an equity stake in their startup within moments of meeting me. That smacks of desperation and turns me off. It's

I'd say the best way would be to add a "No, I just want to get to the homepage!" option to the lightbox. No cookies or saving preferences, just a simple link. But track how often that link is clicked, and if it really is a lot more than 1%

I think we can. I had the idea recently of starting a small web/mobile consulting shop, and using that to build a stable income stream and also a strong team (technical, product, business guys). Once that's established, you slowly move towa
