Exactly. OpenAI is riding out a first mover advantage, but they have no moat. Plus a company like Google can bundle Gemini with other corporate offerings like Drive and Google Docs etc. I just don’t see OpenAI winning this in the long run.

Building on OpenAI as a long term business strategy is dubious. Better go with an established cloud player for these solutions imo. OpenAI might burn through all their money, and end up dropping support for these features and/or being

I’m going to say this is a different ballpark. They are fundraising for themselves.. on their own website.. That’s quite different from shoving ads in your face where it doesn’t belong. Like an ad for Copilot on a YouTube video. IMO it’s di

It doesn’t matter. Companies are hypocritical all the time, a few people make noise at the time, then it’s forgotten.

But the question would be how many more go undetected in those animals. (I.e if wild animals carry it, how accurate are these numbers).

Advent of Code (which given my schedule runs into January). That’s the last time thinking hard about a coding problem, I don’t remember exactly if it was day 10 or 11 that had me scratching my head for a while. I intentionally do not use AI

Oh that’s a flash from the past. For what it’s worth, Eclipse was a better experience for me than Netbeans.. Nowadays all my development work happens in vim and I’ve happily not opened an editor like IntelliJ or VS Code in 5+ years.

Somewhat, but not entirely. For smaller players it's a hassle/PITA but it does enforce some checks and balances on the larger players.

Yeah I’d take this study with a spoon of salt. As with many human studies, it’s hard to control for all factors.

This is pretty cool! This week I was just thinking of vibe coding something with my HN profile as well (e.g, analyze how my writing has changed over the decade-ish of being on here). Also, 95k words written on here apparently. Cool to know

Yet it does feel different with LLMs compared to your examples. Yes, people can’t navigate without Apple/Google maps, but that’s still very different from losing critical thinking skills. That said, LLMs are perhaps accelerating that b

I guess that might be a modern interpretation. But I do disagree as well. I actually prefer older films because of the pacing, and fortunately live close enough to the TIFF cinema that I can see such films every other week.

Can’t exactly relate to the post. I never had a device die on me like that. All my devices with Li-ion batteries are “daily drivers”. I do tend to keep charge between 20-80% where possible, and fortunately haven’t seen significant battery d

Yeah and ultimately those tools will be used as advertising machines. You'll get hyper specific targeted ads. I'm pretty pessimistic about the future with LLMs, but I can't see it being a net positive for humanity in the long

So much negativity about Firefox in these threads. Could they be doing better? Absolutely, but without them we’d have almost no browser choice today. Even if you don’t care too much about FF itself, they also own the Gecko engine on top of
