In a word, test. Testing is what you should be doing for everything, and that doesn't always mean BEFORE implementation. Some of the best feedback you can get is through implementing and THEN validating. If it works, keep it. If it fails

Used to haunt Wickedfire a lot. Not so much recently though. Not sure if AskMetafilter counts, but I've been there for years and love the community.

If you haven't seen Startup dot com (the movie, not website), that's a good place to start.

Yeah, seems like they keep trying to make the site "better". In reality, I had very few issues with the old layout and functionality. Judging by the cascade of negative comments on their blog, I'd say other users feel similarly frustrated

I'm new to coding as well, but so far what I've gathered is that WHAT language you learn is less important than actually sitting down and getting dirty with code. When I was trying to decide what to learn I narrowed the search down by just

As one commenter brought up, I think you need to keep in mind who you are targeting. The real brilliance about Khan Academy, in my mind, is that they aren't just another video tutorial repository. They have a sophisticated back-end tracki

Do you really need someone to tell you who to listen to? These are blogs, not dogmas. Leo Babuta is popular because he has managed to transform his life significantly, while still dealing with something like six kids (I loose count). He

I'm pretty new here (about a week I think). While the voting/karma system isn't readily apparent, like you, I figured it out about a day after registering. I think the FAQ could possibly benefit from a more thorough explanation, but I do

Having been a professional editor for a number of years, I can say that many people in the industry were looking for ANY solution better than Avid. After a number of iterations, it finally looked like FCP could actually be that product. Ma

Yup. I've been a USAA member for about 10 years now and I've never once had an issue with their service, not to mention that I know I can always get an actual human on the phone who is happy to help me. As someone who travels quite a bit,

I've had a lot of friends try Kickstarter for various projects, most have chosen to start longer campaigns under the assumption that more time will increase the chance of funding the project. Personally, I agree with Kickstarter's assessmen

How successful is it? Do a torrent search for any album you want and that will answer your question. I'm not sure the labels really have a solid strategy to combat piracy. So far their threats have seemed pretty arbitrary to me. I highl

I've noticed that. The more I get into web development and the more I learn, the better I am at recognizing the tools that apply to my needs. When you start fresh in any industry, the biggest challenge is trying to find the tools that bes

I'm somewhat like the OP, but my intentions were nothing like his. I got rid of 95% of my stuff, not because it was distracting, but because I never used most of it. I also move a lot and I hate lugging inessentials around from place to pl

I'm pretty sure your question is squarely aimed at experienced developers, but I would like to offer a perspective from someone coming into web development from a completely different industry (film editing). I decided to abandon my career

This is great news. After watching Salman Khan's speech at TED I got really excited about what he's trying to do for education. I really wish more public schools would shift their focus from in-class lectures to working with students in a

I agree. My pet peeve with this article is that it isn't pointed in the right direction. So what if someone wants to believe ghosts or aliens exist? He's certainly correct in saying that it CAN be a problem when things get too intense, but

I'm glad you mentioned Adwords, because that was my first impression. The thing is… I'm not convinced that it's a translatable metaphor. With Adwords there is a much deeper reach that benefits small businesses. If I'm a small, niche spec

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (I've only read the TechCrunch summary for this company) but doesn't this just sound like the online equivalent of pay-for-play? What value is there for the end-user if artists can just pay their way
