You're not alone. In all the circles I know (minus one pal who's worked at Yahoo and now at Facebook - who actually rejected Google) applying to Google is a big deal, and most people are afraid to do it because it's such a big deal. I have

I'm in that boat. I had a phone interview with a recruiter (not an interview-interview) and then decided not to apply. I've taken the last few months to really brush up on some CS theory, but I'm finding that I don't really want to do that

I think your second paragraph hits the nail on the head. What's the point of writing an architecture that's extensible if it requires the user to know all of your code in-depth to use it? Now, if the code was packaged as an API with very go

I agree with you. I was laid off from my last company because I didn't like the direction of the company and wasn't happy with the work. At the same time, profits were down and the company needed to downsize. I still got all of my work don

Arguably, the whole article is in response to this very idea. The idea is succinctly rephrased in his article (as a third party quotation) here: "If Gaskell has produced sound, peer-reviewed literature of high quality then I see no reason

It probably looks better, as I remember Slashdot being really ugly, but the new design is still ugly. The Slashdot header font in particular is an eyesore, but very little on the site actually looks modern or pleasing.

Cool. Thanks for the resource! I've never used OSX, so I didn't know you could rebind the window manager's controls. Good stuff.

Look really nice. Too bad it's just OSX and as jjcm and xtacy pointed out, too bad it doesn't support vim or emacs bindings/integration in some way. I really like your UI choices borrowing so heavily from Chrome, though. Really do... upda

Wow, this is a fairly condemning portrayal of the ACM. Thankfully, I've only once or twice bounced off of their paywall, and otherwise have been happily ignorant of their existence. [EDIT] Removed reference to article being anecdotal.

I have the same issue with living in Vancouver. It might be worse having come from Calgary, Alberta. Generally, in the prairies, the winters are bright and sunny. It's even nice further north around Edmonton where they get more significa

I suffer from this. I can rise around 6am, but around 2 or 3pm I crash hard. Staying the full day at work becomes a serious chore. I suspect this is because I haven't settled into a proper routine of doing this for more than a week straig

I kept thinking this while reading the article, and I'm not sure why nobody else has posted this yet. I am not a fan of "3D" as it exists in it's most recent film form, but this is not a particularly well argued and supported indictment of

I nearly decided on a Nintendo 3DS, but after trying one out in person, I completely changed my mind. I would play it in 2D mode the whole time because the 3D I've seen on it gives me headaches. So basically, I'd be paying a premium for ha

What's the practicality of switching back to horses? It's prohibitively expensive to do so because using horses as a form of transportation is just not supported by the modern market. I say this as someone who suffers from motion sickness,

That is what you'd expect from the company who produces GM corn. Any third-party non-partial analyses of papers by those same authors?

Very nice. There was a different tool I used for prototyping html, but it wasn't as nice and intuitive as this. For now it's bookmarked so I can look at it in more depth later.

I think this is most likely going to be true - especially for us in the tech industry. Rather than being the "wrong" way around, I think you've got it the right way and everyone explicitly chasing money has it the wrong way. :)

Debugging is just another tool. It's not the most valuable tool, but it's also not the least valuable. At work we rely heavily on logging and trace statements. There isn't even a functioning debugger for our UI language implementation. I'

I suspect your comment on the fashion industry is correct. But, I find this article is well-reasoned. It's lacking in sources and concrete arguments, but is well-reasoned nevertheless. In particular, I suspect the author's comment on soft

I agree most with this comment. The article reminds me of get-rich-quick books. "Look at me, I spent relatively little effort and am making XXX amount of money off of it." It's just missing the tagline: "AND YOU CAN TOO!" As you say, buil

After reading the first paragraph, I realized that I mistook "CL" to mean "Clojure." The comment about Common Lisp lacking tail-call-optimization being a factor in not considering it a functional language reflects my only real problem with

Just because something is popular in the mainstream doesn't mean it's not bullshit. As far as calling himself a well paid, well educated troll; well, you can't take a tongue-in-cheek comment like that completely at face value. Rather than

What has changed is the size of the industry. There are so many animation studios these days that the chances of landing in a studio with leaders like Ed Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith are far, far smaller than they were back then.

This inferior game development environment led to two incredibly spectacular, well-rated games. In my opinion, Uncharted 1 and 2 completely eclipsed all of their previous work.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, it's confusing. On the Username input I was also getting the error, but the example shows: http://tagmask.com/yourName Which has camel case that's invalid. :)
