That isn’t screening though, which by definition occurs in people without symptoms or signs. It is true that better access to healthcare or higher health literacy or more scans being done for other reasons will increase the early detection

In fact, all these things have socioeconomic determinants. Air pollution has a relatively small effect compared to the others.

The only cancer routinely screened for in people under 50 is cervical cancer. Even then, the test detects precancerous lesions mainly. As such, ascertainment bias is not a major methodological concern.

Is this even worth doing when people are still smoking, drinking alcohol, living in polluted areas and eating red meat? These are all known risk factors with large effects on cancer risk in younger people. I think the effort is better spent

She's dead. She has ceased to be. If you think this is an appropriate time to trot out grievances, which I'm sure are all well justified, then we have a different understanding of common decency.

This is the most disappointing thread I’ve seen on HN in a long time. A large number of accounts have been banned and rightly so. There are lots of good and interesting comments, but also lots of comments dancing on her grave. This is one o

That's fine, but Amazon isn't rewriting his books. I think it is impossible to infer Tolkien's reaction, and furthermore, quite silly to try and enforce that inferred reaction. Take the Wheel of Time series. A lot of unhappy

I just don't understand the level of virtriol about a TV show. Is this the fruit of waning religiosity, where everyone adopts whatever random cause and fights to the death about it? I thought we got past this malarkey with the stunning

This is just what humans do in status hierarchies where the aim is to achieve more status. The military, the priesthood and imperial concubines will be just as bad. They tend to be monolithic structures, so you can’t just defect to another

There is some great content on substack, but it is invariably too verbose. As much as I’m glad anyone can now indulge themselves in unrestrained quill scratching, 95% of substack content needs to be edited for length. Surely there is an NLP

I think you can write a book to have a good beginning, and you can write a book to have a good ending, but it is very hard to do both. William Gibson books are all about the ending I find. The beginnings are positively disorienting most of

I don't think this is the right way to think about this. The editors of a journal do screen the articles that get published. Their criteria are hidden. They do not need to justify in any way why the accept or reject a submission. The p
