Heh, that takes me back! In 1994, I was a high schooler volunteering at a famous west coast science museum (it was either that or work at Taco Bell, thanks dad), and one of my tasks was to make a searchable employee directory... I don'

Would you please stop editing your post? You've made several substantial changes -- far beyond the scope of a clarification -- and now I'm reluctant to respond at all because who knows what it'll say next.

And if our culture doesn't already support trans and non-binary people (ideology? no, it's people we're talking about), then that seems like it'd be a good thing to change.

So you faced what seems like an ultimately mild consequence for a publicly-held and socially unpopular position. And this is the cancel culture we're all supposed to be worried about, really? What would have been, in your estimation, t

Of course this is it. That libertarian-inspired quip is as old as it is not clever, but I don't imagine we'll ever stop seeing it posted.

If your claim is supported by that article you linked down below, it seems like a big stretch to refer to Democrats as a unified whole ("believe Democrats ... after they") when you're referring to three people, two of whom we

Republicans are absolutely working to roll back legal protections for the LGBT community and have been engaged in a decades-long fight to reduce women's access to health care. They're also fully in support of the immigration polic

With tens of millions of Americans facing food insecurity and tens of millions of Americans facing eviction now, thanks to years of precarity exacerbated by the COVID-19, I think the situation is worse than you're suggesting.

I felt this way when I was 25, like I'd been programming since I was 7 and I was hot shit. I'm approaching 40 now and only in the last year or two does it occur to me that, even at 25, I was really only middle-grade. I wonder what

That Heinlein quote is nice, but also a little absurd. I can change a wall outlet or a light switch, but if I'm rewiring my house, I'm calling my brother-in-law, the electrician, just like he calls me when he wants a trumpet playe

What's amazing to me about that anecdote is that it seems like such a tremendously small reason to dislike unions, for all they do to improve worker safety, pay, and provide a stop against exploitation by corporate owners. I would cons

Unions aren't anti-capitalist, they explicitly work within a capitalist framework to ensure better pay and working conditions for their workers. Unions deal in money and don't seek to change that, unions recognize and don't c

Something else to be aware of is, with Powell's you're also supporting a union shop that pays its staff pretty well. No one's pissing in bottles in the back room at Powell's, unless it's for fun.

I've traveled through some pretty remote places in both hemispheres, and the US has nothing on isolation compared to the mountains in Central Asia. Remoteness won't really protect people here, not like it would there.

I don't know if rural folks may realize how well-armed we are in the cities. Nearly everyone I know has a gun, and none of us is the crowd you'd normally associate with gun owners in cities.
