I think a key reason is HN has (IMO) a well-designed vote-based moderation system. Flamebait tends to get downvoted/flagged pretty quickly, burying it where it belongs. Contrast that to pure engagement-focused social networks like Face

Did you ever use Glass? The display was really too small to get work done; I would describe it as identical in functionality to a smartwatch, just on your face instead of wrist.

Based on this part of the official statement released by Waymo: > "...the Fleet Response team provided incorrect guidance..." It sounds like the car automatically pulled over when it detected the cones (as intended), but the

A bit disappointing it doesn't mimic any of the glass-motion effects that Win7 had. I really like the colored glass hover effect that they used for running applications in the taskbar. (And let's not forget the way the "shine

An excellent article and one that lays out convincing points why, when choosing between absolute free speech and silencing the crazies, the latter is the lesser of two evils. This paragraph is probably the most relevant quote: > But mor

Agreed, this seems more like a UX problem than a "people don't value privacy" problem. No reasonable person would ever expect that connecting your phone to a car's wireless audio system would transfer all your contacts -

Realistically you can’t get big infrastructure projects built without angering some group of people. People here in the US love the highway system, but there’s absolutely no way anything like it could be built today. At some point we just

An interesting output of this is, if you keep scrollbars visible, you'll find that a lot of websites end up with weird extra scrollbars on random elements. What often causes this is some HTML element overflowing by one pixel, but no on

The SFUSD school board has, at this point, become essentially a caricature of what conservatives think liberals are like. They're like if you took a strawman argument and willed it into reality. It's really a shame, I hope they ca

Sadly it's not supported at all on iOS, since apparently the Signal devs don't believe that people ever lose phones.

Absolutely! Telegram provides nice to have features like cloud message history, but those inherently mean it's less secure. I actually wish Signal had a "trade some security for convenience" option like that.

The article states that all the emails appeared to be from official Harvard email addresses. At some universities, it’s possible to create email aliases at your .edu domain, so it’s possible that the scammer had access to one or more convin

Exactly this. A lot of other messaging apps have this problem (read the App Store reviews of LINE for a sampler of people upset about it), and I find it baffling. Have these devs never lost a phone (or had one break unexpectedly?) It seems

The issue with Signal that annoys me most is the complete lack of any meaningful backup/export on iOS. I lost my entire chat history when I got a new phone because their bizarre "proximity based" solution failed.
