My problem with most overloaded operators is that they too often have no sensible name. When I talk to myself while coding, I have no name to say out loud. I have nothing but a picture, when I try to remember the operator.

At first I wanted to link to C64 productions such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=gG... but then I realized that the IBM PC was vastly worse designed than the C64. On the CPU, altho

I've been fighting exhaustion/fatigue, and some degree of depression that seems to always come with exhaustion, for more than 10 years. It's been a journey to put it mildly, but now I know myself better than ever. From what I

If you really are depressed, everyone around you most likely already know it. They already know, the medication will not be the reason people know your mental health.

I think it's a very cool idea as this could let the JIT melt together browser code with user code to one tight piece of code.

Thank you for this really interesting comment. I wonder if the lead could leave the body, and if the effects it had are somewhat reversed over time, for those that lived in environments with much traffic. Do you have any idea about this?

What happened next? Did the bug get fixed? Did you do a work-around somehow? Don't leave stories unfinished like this :)

Or create a standard of annotations for C, like those used by Java and C#? NotNull, CanBeNull etc, and let the static analyzers use those hints to help even more.

I wonder if any of the existing static code analyzers would have found this? PVS-Studio checks some open source projects and posts part of the results on their blog. I did a search and found that they did take a look at OpenSSL in 2012. ht

I ran this in Chrome, Safari 7 and Firefox. Firefox was the slowest of them all by quite some margin. I guess asm.js specific code enables some drastic speedups with less effort from the JIT's point of view. Too bad this code did not u

If they got an improvement of 116% perhaps a spinlock isn't the right solution? It sounds more like the subsystem protected should be autonomous and respond to messages in a message queue instead.

C# sure compiles fast, but if you have several projects in one solution the majority of the time is spent shoveling dll's around like there's no tomorrow. SSD helps only a bit. :-/

Years ago, I've used procmon.exe and saw VB6 load project files by doing tons of 1 byte reads... I wonder if the behavior in the article also applies to C# compiles?

In Scheme, tail-call optimization is part of the standard. Without this requirement the generated code would probably be much more similar to what you'd write by hand. On top of this, the generated code is said to be portable C. I'

I have the book and have read some of it years ago. I can't remember if the OS-tasks were an isolated process or just a thread in shared memory. My first comment would be for a kernel built up using threads in shared memory communicati

Ever since I studied how the *BSD and Linux kernels worked I felt it was not very elegant, it used to be like a web of spinlocks(analogy taken from a mail by Terry Lambert, FreeBSD developer). I think FreeBSD and Linux today use kernel-side
