I'd speculate that it's less about politics and empires, and more about not getting too many cooks in the kitchen. It's easy to blur the vision for your product when you have opinions coming in from five thousand people, never mind having t

Let me guess - you're a male in your mid-twenties or maybe early thirties? (me too!) Once you start having a family, kids, house, etc., you're going to be far less inclined to bounce around the country or world for your job, even if those f

They don't prioritize finding historical data, which is why the permalink URL is all the more important. There are (or at least were) third-party services dedicated solely to finding older Twitter data. Again, this is no different than an

Anyone looking to actually verify the source (this is at least partially why they're cited, right?) is going to have difficulty locating the original tweet without the permalink. The original tweet, along with the link, can be deleted - but

Ironically, I'd be much more likely to harm someone with moonshine than with an XL magazine. In any case, the stand I'd be taking is about the absurdity of trying to ban 3d printing of specific devices, not about gun rights. I can't think o

As someone else pointed out, including suicides in gun death statistics is pointless: they would have found another method had guns not been available. I looked into the stats briefly on murders per 100k by country, and the US was somewhere

When that happens, I'm immediately printing off several high-capacity mags out of principle, and I don't even own a firearm (thought about it, but I don't have time to go to a range so the liability isn't worth it for me). While I understan

In the same way that code isn't data. Yes, it's bytes in memory like any other data, but it's the means rather than the end. You care about the data, and the query (or code) is what you use to get it.

People seem to be confusing "NoSQL" and "non-relational". Mongo happens to be both, but there's nothing fundamental that puts the two together. You may not get the full capabilities of SQL with non-relational data (JOINs, etc), but there's

I'll confirm San Jose being way too hot. I lived there during our YC summer and it was 90-100 every day. Palo Alto and Menlo Park are incredibly comfortable 10+ months out of the year, and maybe a light jacket the rest of the time.

I don't have a source for this, but as an interviewer, simply thinking about what I can get from a riddle indicates it's probably true. I have a mental checklist of about fifteen items that I try to get answered when interviewing a candida

It usually takes a tragedy to actually accomplish anything in government (occasionally just a wildly outlandish remark, but I digress). Progress is still progress, even if the event that got the ball rolling should have never happened. Also

I'm not about to install that extension and find out myself as that could cause some... serious problems... but that was my first thought as well. What's to stop this from doing something nefarious? Its sandboxing privileges are not remotel

It's a problem with ACH in general. However, debits from consumer accounts (or, more accurately, those initiated with a "PPD" code) can be refuted for something like two years. By submitting a file straight to the networks, I could also deb

You think MAC spoofing and editing your hosts file to get around a paywall has gone mainstream? I'd be astonished if there were two HN readers on most flights.

On my last flight, the price had been raised to $20 or so. I'm not sure if it was holiday price-gouging or they've simply raised their prices, but in either case I was not pleased - especially as the service quality seems to have gone down

A comment above addresses this well: shell companies, which is really the problem we should be fixing. Granted, the definition is probably still difficult to legally define despite how obvious it is when you're looking at one.

I'm not sure it would be wise to provide the private key for www.whitehouse.gov to Akamai to attempt such a configuration, no matter how trustworthy they are. They need to fix the routing internally (slower, but safer).
